I agree with victim of theft.
You do not have the right to take the bike, the police can not grant such authority to you.
Hahaha, can't believe all this bs from you guys...come down...
How do you know police can't authorize someone with good will to re-use a bike to take it if its abandoned? Oh wait...you don't know!
And for future reference: People who want to retrieve ABANDONED property, go to the police station and explain your situation to them, don't ask in this thread as you risk getting bs from people who don't have nothing better to do

Look at the head set, its mint. Its hardly been left for more than a couple of days.

That's the cleanest 'abandoned' bike I've ever seen.

Where I come from a working definition of abandoned at least includes flat tires... as well as a stripped frame and a bit of rust from a few months rain and snow... not a well-locked wheel and frame in pristine condition.

+1
How long had that actually been there?
The chrome on forks is practically perfect also in the second picture that lock hardly looks old either.
Ruddy hell remind me not to lock a bike up round Kings Cross area for more than a couple of days with Pol paz around!
Looks to me like someone locked it up someone misappriated unsecured parts owner left it there as couldn't be bothered to cart it home, they are going to come back in a few days and find the whole lot has gone.
You gonna buy the rightful owner a new lock if they do surface?

pol paz, look at that frame, does it look like it's been left outside that long? No.
You are a grade A cunt.
In your original post you said it was "currently rusting away in the streets". No it wasn't.
You saw it and decided it was abandoned on the same day. Waiting until just the next day to try and take it.
You are truly a horrible person. -

I like this new notion of how to obtain new bike.
Can I just confirm I go up to plod, say a bike has been abandoned for ages and ask if I can take it?
To then take it does not count as theft?
Awesome
My weekend will be spent scouring bike racks around town.

Wohoo! back online, food was good...
Here you have some more pictures, you can even see that someone had a go with a hacksaw some time ago and that had rusted too! but yes...maybe the level of humidity raised to 600% in two days and all that rust just appeared overnight...
If you see the picture of the bike on my coffee table shining is because i used PEEK, is great, recomend it to your friends! it cleans all the rust stains in two seconds! gotta love it!

There's no way that bike was abandoned. I've seen CSI and it looks more likely that it was attempted stolen pre-Christmas and that the owner has neglected it whilst he/she gets funds together to repair the damaged wheel (damaged during the attempted theft). Then the bad weather has caused a rapid rust on the chain, and some minor vandalism has tainted the saddle.
But most importantly, the chrome on the forks reveals very clearly that the bike has not been abandoned. Factoring in the bad weather over the past couple of months, it's in pretty good nick.
As pointed out in this thread, the police and the council have NO RIGHT to declare theft legal. Theft is theft, pure and simple. You have removed someone else's property without their permission, and you defend this by saying that it's OK as someone else said it was fine.
If that is OK, then give us your address as I think your whole flat looks abandoned and prancer wants to remove it.
Seriously pol paz, you'll never now have love on here or on any other cycle forum which the people on here frequent... unless you right now surrender that bike to a local police station as lost property. That's the only thing you should be doing. And if after 6 months or whatever, the police say that no-one has collected it and you can have it... then fine. But no way do you have any right or claim to that.
I hope someone goes to the police and reports it as stolen, just so I can gleefully give over your details and the police can remove the bike from you just after you've blinged it out.

This kind of street tidying is pretty popular nowadays. Just yesterday I spotted two young men (who thoughtfully took their pliers with them for the day) hurriedly cycling away with a motorcycle helmet they had tidied. Some silly person had abandoned it on to their motorcycle for the day with a cable lock. Call it Big Society if you will.

That only confirms this...
...it looks more likely that it was attempted stolen pre-Christmas
And I can tell you know nothing about rust, it's not time that is the issue it's evaporation and salt. Given that it has snowed several times, melted during the day, and that salt has been sprayed... honestly, that level of rust is expected from any bike that has been locked outside for the last month.
Not months, or years, but month.
Hell, the chain on my road bike that has spent 60 days on my balcony is as rusty. And that hasn't even been near road grit/salt.
That was never abandoned.
