get an iphone
Or get the headphone port fixed? have you tried poking a needle into it? I seem to remember something like that working for my girlfriends mb.
I've just read this on another forum after a quick google:
I called Apple Tech support. She had me shut down and then unplug everything from the Imac. I then plugged back in the power cord and pushed and held in the power button until the Imac started. I plugged back in my keyboard and mouse, logged in, and plugged back in my speakers and Voila: SOUND from my speakers. She told me that what I did was reset my ports. She didn't know why the headphone jack when on the fritz in the first place.

Anyone wanna sell me a nice big 22" (or bigger) graphics quality monitor? Considering dropping cash on a refurb 24" Apple Cinema Display or a used TFT Eizo/Lacie if one comes up at the right price...

apple displays not worth the money, look nice though.
Lacie on the other hand are 'da nutz'

facepalm!
Try the port reset though. Don't forget to unplug the power cable from the mac too

We use Apple displays in the studio, absolutely second to none IMO.

They don't calibrate as well as Lacies do. No way. They make everything look, nice, clear and bright though..

any thoughts on what make of 1TB drive to get, going to upgrade the storage on the mac pro that has just been returned into my possession and want to get a couple of internal 1TB drives and an external one as well, which I can lug around with me.
Anyone have any horror stories about brands/manufacturers, or should I just jump in and get the cheapest one I can.many thanks

look your machine up here: http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/ and upgrade accordingly. Internal HD's are generally pretty cheap so there doesn't seem much point scrimping on them.

24" iMacs are pretty awesome Chris.
When I was a Grafik I had one with 8gb of ram and a MacPro with 6gb and dual fanciness.. I actually preferred using the iMac in the end, unless I was batch processing and working in InDesign simultaneously. I've got one as my studio machine now and I've had no problems with it in 2 years.
Oh, and non glossy ftw - I hate these new screens

Scrumpymacs (also on ebay) has always proven useful for second-hand mac stuff at a decent price... read the descriptions well, but mostly it seems his items are from corporate liquidations/ex demo /refurbished with only cosmetic marks, and he usually applies a 6mth warranty. I grabbed a 23" cinema display for around £300 delivered, no issues whatsoever.
(I have no affiliation with them whatsoever)

Yeah, glossy is a joke.. can you believe I do colour correction on a 20 inch iMac at work?
Anyway... I'm not too excited by the idea of buying one but they do seem plenty powerful.. might as well try and get a 27 and ditch any external monitor... getting a neck ache switching between my two screens at home...

timmy was hoping for something a bit more portable, as I'll need to lug it into work to copy footage onto, so I can work from home...
also thinking I'd like a firewire 400/800 for quicker movement of info -

Anybody want to take a 17" imac G4 off my hands (one of the ones with the monitor on a stick). Unit only. The colour rendering of the monitor is off: I fixed it once by dismantling the whole unit and fiddling with the cable, but be warned it's a couple of hours careful work to do this and requires the use of thermal paste. Free!
hmmm, would it be too geeky to turn it into a desk lamp?

Some WD Passports have FW800 but not with 1tb so maybe a thirdoarty caddy is the answer, don't forget higher capacity portable drives have a much slower speed than smaller ones.

Oh yeah, sorry I meant 27" - they're plenty big.

27 inch is good for drawing but i couldnt use it all day everyday for lfgss and things. plus they over heat alot.

• #1473
I guess it's all about what you're used to, but 27" seems huge to me
got a 24" iMac at work, designing websites on that is great. My college has a 27", a website on that just looks like a colourful piece of bogroll down the middle of the screen

Qué?
exactly. It's a joke. In fact it seems to cope with CS5 better than web browsers etc for some reason
