  • any decent club you might want to ride with should let you do 3 events before joining surely? try and find the outgoing one that wants to sign you up! have a good one

  • Best climb in the forest I've found so far is coming out of Beaulieu towards Hyth.

I don't think I'll bother to gear down for this one though, that is if they allow a non club member to come race.

You would probably need to gear up! I used to ride a 70ish gear on the road and that hill was still easily sprintable. As I am now on 58 SS on a cross bike I could not enter this one as the gearing would slow me down.

  • 5th Place. Beaten by two teenagers a guy on a civello and another guy on a nice road bike so I don't feel too bad, plus I had tool and water bottle (getting in the excuses!).

Spoke to lots of people and drank tea. Might do a 100 km ride from Boulder tomorrow depends how much work I get done this afternoon. Bournemouth Jubilee sound like a good club might give them a go.

Yeah they let me ride as a guest. Met lots of people at Burley tea rooms from different clubs but who all converge at Burley so was able to gleam information.

What was the winning time and where was the start/finish line? Was the start just before the Braggers Wood scout camp place and the finish at the left turn for the Tyrell place?

Just so I can get a reality check and see how slow I really am.

  • finish line was by the triangle entrance to avon tyrrell

Start was at this gateway I think behind the 40 mph sign.

Winning time was 2:54 I think. It was a very informal affair.

  • Cheers Tommy. Will give it a blast tomorrow.

  • from southampton, but near bridport at the mo. plenty of hills round here. didnt realise how unfit i was. haha. cant wait to move back to soton for a bit more flat.

  • that second hand dealer in Boscombe has got a Witcomb in at mo, drilled campy large flange hubs, nice campy cranks, mechs, bout 56cm at a guess, he wants 60 notes, someone buy it.

  • Nice spot.

  • Mon pere's going down at the weekend, will send him over...

  • For him or for you?

  • 56 would fit him lovely. Go nicely with his Vernon Barker.

  • (Plus would save him having to carry the VB up and down all the time)

  • he has some stupidly big 80's racing bike in there too thats 531 good nick, been there a while,
again, cant be arsed to pick them up although if people had the inclination you could buy --sell on.

  • Too slow. The Witcomb went yesterday, father got there today. Win some, lose some. Lost this one.

  • fuck, sorry dude,
it wasnt that lustworthy or I would have bought it and ridden 2 up back to poole ;-)

if theres any dirt riders reading this last plug for my event tommorrow at Rempstone,
cpme and have a go, prizes!, caterers!. navigating, getting lost, getting found,
and shit loads of muddy trails,

  • I'm from wimborne

  • I think I just saw that Whitcomb in Weymouth!!! Old fella going mad for broke- passed me on my fixed- mind you it is snowing and I have a post 10 mile Veterans Race knee problem!!!

  • If anyone is interested I have a shorter racer frame up for sale. It is 56cm frame and has riduculously tight clearences (less than 5mm). I rather sell this locally since tbh, it is less effort.

  • Just wondering, if you had to commute daily from the Castlepoint area (no jokes pls) to Poole Quay - what would be your chosen route? Options are:

    • Castle Lane > Redhill > Boundary Rd > Wallisdown Rd > Ringwood Rd > Longfleet Rd
    • Charminster Rd > Wimbourne Rd > Seafront > Shore Rd > Sandbanks Rd

Alder Rd looks pretty direct but how evil will the hill be with a gear ratio of 3.2?

  • Alder Rd is steady enough that you can push quite a large GI up it without too much hassle (if you like that sort of thing), and the more you do it the easier it'd be. 3.2 would be upper end of 'fun' though, but still comfortably doable.
Depends on your legs and your head :)

Here's the route I'd take. Alder hill is much steeper coming back from Poole, and also there's some traffic lights ON a hill, which is a bitch. You should be alright though if you take up the whole lane. Also danger area is turning right from Boundary Road onto Wallisdown Road. I've done it about 1000 times, and probably had about 50 close calls and 2-3 REALLY close calls. You can easily go on the pavement though. It's fine on the way back though as it's a left turn. Alternatively go the cemetary junction route when going in that direction.
