  • So I have a stuck post.....Its a Dura Ace Easton post stuck in a Colnago Master frame. Tried WD40 soaking and reading through Sheldon my next stop is Ammonia. I was planning to hang it upside down and pour it through a bottle boss ? Should I really think about stripping the bike down and going in through the BB ? Also will this harm the paint work ? presently I cannot get enough purchase on the post as clamp is now rotating at the top of the post. Next steps ?

    1) Drill a hole through the post and get a large screwdriver to give me more leverage ?
    2) Cut it out, I can hacksaw down through the slot in the seat clamp

Which will be the best way to protect the frame ?

I suppose my only real question is the Ammonia / Paint one.....

Also in future which is better to protect the post, grease or copper grease ?

    Ta

  • Had a nightmare once...took my Faggin to some Hobbitt in his work shop and found him using a blow torch on the bottom tube to make the steel expand..
got the post out but savaged the paintwork..I kept my dignity and left before beating the hobbitt with the forks...

  • Just try all of Sheldon's methods, one by one.

  • Helpful link Murts

  • thanks

I used method number 2, took a while but definately works.

  • i tried that for 4 hours = no joy!!

caustic soda = happy, happy, joy, joy!

  • Ha, It took me about 4 evenings...but when I eventually got through I squeezed the tube with molegrips and pulled it out.

  • Merge?

  • Will the Caustic Soda kill the paint though ? the comment "makes an effective paint stripper" fill me with horror.

  • sorry about the other linky, it worked for me

  • I cut mine out . Patience and a steady hand is essential . It takes time .

Caustic soda would be messy .

Cylcos Uno in Chigwell offer a cutting out service which won't damage the frame

  • Okay looks like cutting over anything liquid is a better option to preserve the paint work. Yeah saw that Cyclos Uno advert....might give them a call.

  • I feel for you, I have same issue.

My old mans next door neighbour used to own a bike shop and says he swears by putting diesel in there.

Leave it for a few days upside down and says he has always managed to get them out this way.

Haven't tried it yet so cant confirm if it works or not.

My frame is a coppi with neuron tubing and campag chorus aero seatpost both mint so really don't want to cut it out or use caustic etc want to save it if I can

  • To try and get some expansion on the seat tube without damaging the paint I've wrapped it in a cloth and then poured on boiling water. You could try some plumber’s pipe freezing spray on the post also.
Drilling a hole through the post put a long strong bolt or bar through and use this to provide additional purchase in a vice.
I would use the caustic soda when all else has failed

  • maybe you already tried the rubber mallet approach, hold/clamp the frame upside-down and just bang away at the saddle, hit the saddle nose at the side to get it to turn/loosen

  • Tried a variation but I cannot get enough purchase on the post as the clamp is now rotating at the top of the post

  • I just wrote a nice piece but it did not save it.

Ok, At the top of the Easton seat post is a quarter size shiny piece that is glued in the post.

It is a cap, the ammonia will eat through it after about 7-8 hours. It did through mine on my Anchor Bridgestone frameset.

I am going to reglue and try again on Monday.

    I will update

    S/F,
    CEYA!

  • Ammonia did not hurt my finish but smelling it all day is another thing.

Have a tube to pour down the seat tube. I didn't and chainstays and downtube got some of it.

Will try Coke soda again too.

  • I have a stuck seatpost and am resorting to caustic soda as i still have a bottle left over from the joys of removing my Miche BB...

  • Roughly how long do you think it would take with caustic soda?

  • Got an alloy post out of a steel frame by cutting the top off and gently peeling it from the inside with a wooden mallet and screwdriver, plus a little WD40. Took about two hours.

Impossible to tell whether several days soaking in diesel prior made much difference, but I'm inclined to think it didn't.

  • It'll take approx 5 days and you have to change the caustic soda solution every 24hours. It's very nasty stuff, wear appropriate safety gear.

If I was you, I'd take it to cyclus uno. 25quid is a bargain compared with the strife of hacksawing or danger of caustic soda
