Very tempted by a Kindle. Do people think it's worth paying extra for the 3G version? I live in France where almost all wireless is encrypted, so I'm thinking it would be worthwhile

Just brought the kindle wi fi version. Absolutely rocks. I use my android as a wireless hotspot so if I really need to download somewhere I can. So impressed with it, probably my best buy this year as I got some money off.

yes, It's like buying an Xbox without a hard drive.

Not true Ed. If you've got wi fi at home or can create wireless hot spots with your phone why would you need it?

in London, usually it's fine, but what about outside London where wifi is sacred?
To be fair, it's not a problem when you already downloaded all the books you need and go travelling, but it's nice to have that option of being able to download a book anywhere where there's no wifi.
much like having a watch that does 200 metres underwater, you'll never go that deep, but it's nice to know that it can handle a few splash.

On the subject of kindle cases, there's no way I'll be spending £50 on a case.
Does this one look up to the job?
-
• #284
Yeah, if the light is removable... bit chunky and ugly no?
-
• #285
Check the reviews of those ... especially the similar ones without the lights, for about £30. They have had loads of operating problems with the Kindles when they are in those cases.

I think I'd rather use a small head torch in the dark. Useful for all tasks. A lot less than £30 too.
-
• #287
Plus one on head torch, they rock.
As for 3G or not, I would say definitely. It's a total bargain, since you get free 3G access in 120 countries and you can use the device to check web emails, forum, twitter etc. Bargainous.

Anyone have any interesting free books they have found? not feeling reading sherlock holmes or the others on the top list at the moment.
And what kindle cases have people bought?

I mentioned using Calibre earlier in the thread, just thought I would mention it again for new Kindle owners. It basically converts epub, pdf or other docs to Kindle format. You get get a load of books from Project Gutenburg and convert them yourself.
Likewise I find Instapaper to be really useful for saving long web pages for reading later.

I just want something to hold the kindle, not necessary when I'm reading it just to stop it getting knocked about when It's in my bag.

I'd quite like something to hold it, keep it safe when on my bike and It's in a bag. The light is just nice for when I want to read in bed.

So I can buy one of them head torches for a couple of quid, I still need to find myself a case!

I've got the £30 leather case- works very well, I don't worry about the kindle getting knocked about, and I can use the elastic band thingie to strap the kindle to my hand when standing on the train and holding on with my other hand.

I have kindle now and although the 3G internet is free, it's really not up to the job of web browsing.
It's far too slow. Especially in terms of images.
On the other hand, if you do need to see a page.e.g emails, and and don't mind the wait, it's completely fine.
The 3G and the experimental web browser is not really up to the job quite yet. -

Might must get a cheap cover since I won't be reading in it.

£30 for a leather case is one thing £25 for a neoprene case takes the piss.

Just got mine.
I don't think I'll need a cover, it's perfectly comfty to hold on it's own, and it's fairly robust, just don't treat it like a book that much.

Cover=peace of mind when it's in your bag
out of interest are you using the 3g on the kindle to download torrents???
