Thanks chaps, some good suggestions here which have got me thinking. Looks like what I really need is something like the Pen EP2, to give me the comparable functionality, size and simplicity as the Voigtlander Bessa L. These are £850 for kit with the viewfinder and 17mm lens.
However, being a little bit skint, I will probably opt for a little pocketable XZ-1, a Lumix GF1 or even the Sony NES-5 which a pal might be able to get me a deal on.
The hard questions long term are whether I sell my cherished film cameras. What I have been doing in recent years is developing B&W myself and scanning the negs at home. This may sound like lunacy, but film cameras have worked for me for a long time and I'm loath to give up their intuitive ways.
