    But (and Nikola please don't think I'm having a pop - because I'm certainly not) if I was the owner and I'd done the right thing by reporting the theft to the fuzz, I'd hope that anyone who had my bike would have handed it in. If I then discovered that said person had an on the spot decision to make and had paid 60 quid out to get it, then I guess I'd sort them out too.

    Also, am I not right in thinking that any 'lost property' handed to the police by a member of the public is by rights the property of that person, should they want it after a certain period of time has passed? (I was rather pointlessly offered a pair of prescription glasses which I handed in once).
