It certainly will fuck your machine if you're using London tap juice. Ever looked in a kettle? Now imagine that stuff in a machine that has tiny valves and pumps... Oy.
I just use a brita jug filter, does a great job and are pretty cheap. Its certainly worth doing. In the meantime, order some descaler! And not citric acid because that will fuck your boiler.
How long have you been using it without filtered water?
