I'm all about the cheap shit shoes, mostly trainers or Monkee boots.. I can see what GA2G's getting at with the handmade stuff, some of them do look lovely and probably wear beautifully ...
Anyway +1 on Gerald's mention of Paraboots, the classic paraboot shoe is this. My french exchange was into them back in 86 and I wanted them for years after ... got a pair now, had em ages, still lovely:
