Given up the fags and now looking to reinvent my cycling past, get fit again. Just exhumed my early post war Maclean which I bought back in ยด75. Intending to undo all the sacrilege inflicted by restoring it to its nearly original state - one or two practicalities need to make it a viable means of transport

Thanks. Hope M4 brakes (200mm front, 180mm rear) with Goodridge hoses. Not sure yet if to have both front and rear, or just rear.

Race style MTB shoes and conventional pedals are not a great idea - the studs on the sole always seem to be in exactly the wrong place relative to the pedal cage plate, so you get an effect like an old school slot cleat but invariably in the wrong place, plus they catch on the plates when you're trying to pull your foot out of the toe clip, and the Velcro straps on top snag on your clips/straps.
Before I got some lovely Quoc Pham's for last years Tweed Run, I'd been using Shimano MT22s with clips and straps. They've got sensible laces rather than chunky velcro that gets in the way. I did modify the tread a little to get them to slid in nicely, but because of the shape of the areas on the tread to protect the cleats I didn't get the problem Mr Tester describes. I did get a nice stiff shoe though.
I only use clips and straps on one bike because it looks right (sad, I know). SPDs are really much better for regular use. -

or just go clipless cos it's 1,000,000x better.
Thought about it and I know it's vain, but I hate the look of time attacks on my 70's/80's style tracks. I'd go for Eggbeaters but I saw a dude unclip once and it didn't look fun :) Something I'll consider though. Any suggested pedals that would suit an all silver component bike?

Thats kinda what I thought and what my issue was with them in theory. The gap where the cleat was looked like it would be uncomfortable on longer rides and the "knobbles" would be problematic...

i don't wanna start a new thread for this, but has anyone south/south-east got a set of hardware to attach toe clips knocking about? Bought some from the forum last week but alas, no bolts.
Otherwise, its bodge jobs from the local DIY shop.

That is gorgeous... just swap the wheels for some carbon clinchers... ;)
Hmm, tempting but I think that my push my wife over the edge. As I mentioned a while back, this started out as a cheap commuter project to replace my stolen Pearson Touche...
