  • ^^ Yeah im running omnium's on my steamroller, super nice cranks. Nice and stiff and look awesome, i just wish i had got mine in black.

  • If you want it, go for it.

I need opinion es. on the chainline issue.
I appreaciate Steamroller owners with Omnium to give some input. The crank+bb is quite pricey so I want to make sure it fits well rather than buying and selling it at lost.

  • it's a bicycle with 120 spacing design for a single chainring, it will fit.

It's also called the Truvativ Omnium and it's in the transmission database.

    Thank your for responding mate.
Did you face any issues with the chainline? Running on stock Surly Hub?

Yes, most bikes are 120mm spacing but not all crank will fit perfectly.
It depends on the frame; what's the biggest chainring, the longest arm length and BB/Spindle length to get perfect chainline. That's why I asked abt Omnium ON Steamroller specifically.

What are you using to attach your mudguards to the stays/forks? Looks like an adaptor. Where did you get it?

  • p-clips

    p clips

  • Dude, you're a dude.

    Thanks

  • 13mm p clips for the back... got 16mm for the forks on mine but they're loose. so best bet might be 13mm on both..

  • Cheers for that, was going to get the calipers out but will go with what you said.

  • Hey, yeah i just used some p-clips i found in the garage, but i didnt measure them. Im running a miche track hub and the chainline is ever so slightly out but the bike runs as smooth as butter so its never worried me, ive read a few places that the omniums dont ever quite line up perfecly, but i aint no track racer so i didnt worry about it.

  • Great bike, Guy
I see you've fitted full mudguards. Have you had to remove the rear wheel for a puncture yet? Is that easy or fiddly with the horizontal dropouts?
Also, are your tyres 23 or 25s?

^^ Yeah im running omnium's on my steamroller, super nice cranks. Nice and stiff and look awesome, i just wish i had got mine in black.

  • ^^ To be honest i havent had to remove the rear since i fitted the guards 300miles ago due to the roads i ride are almost totally free from glass thorns etc... but i cant imagine it being to difficult as the guards are pretty flexable and the stays are only held on by 8mm nuts which i could loosen fairly easily if required. The tires are 28c continental citycontact's and have plenty of clearance. I squeezed a 35c tire in the front when i was fitting the guards but i did have to hack the guards about in order for it not to rub, but i would recon a 32c's would work ok. The guards are sks chromoplastic p45's.

  • Thanks, Guy.

I have some SKS 35s that I'm looking to run with 25s. I have been meaning to fit for ages, just haven't got round to it. I got some extra quick release brackets (like you have at the front) for about £3 to make it easier to remove the rear wheel with the horizontal drop outs, but until I fit them I couldn't tell you how useful this is. I don't fancy having to remove little nuts when I'm cold, wet, tired and pissed off that I've flatted. It is a recipe for my losing patience and losing the little nuts. When I've fitted them I will post. Gotta do it sooner rather than later.

  • you don't lose little nuts and bolts if you have the habit of screwing them back in as soon as you can, in this case you'd undo them, pull the mudguard out enough to remove the wheel but put the bolts back in leaving the mudguard free. Never lose them this way

  • OK, will try that!

  • Got mine pretty much how I want it now, one week after I built it up I'm happy to post pics. Took me a few days to decide on a stem/bars height but finally cut the steerer yesterday. Fitted full length mudguards today but these pics are from yesterday before I put those on.
I got the full bike and swapped over some bits from my last bike but still think it broke even cost-wise (I got my store discount and sold the parts I took off), plus the bits I changed were all upgrades.
So, we have a 2010 Steamroller with original wheels, brakes, seatpost. Upgraded Hope headset, SRAM crank, White Industries freewheel, FSA stem, Cannondale OS bars, Tektro levers, Charge saddle and Halo Berlin Courier tyres.
I haven't looked back over this thread but it was only a few weeks ago I was wondering if I should get another Surly, you all said basically it's a no brainer and you were right.
    It rides like a beauty.

  • what size is it? the hoods look a long way from the saddle...

  • 59cm
The drop is about 9cm I think, the reach is fine, I'm 6' 2".
If I get really old one day I'll get a shorter stem

  • It's quality void. Very jealous.

  • I have to add, meant to say above, this is a workhorse bike, not porn.
It's my primary mode of transportation, will be working too as long as I keep the courier job.
Everything about it's meant to be utilitarian not sex, I guess flat bars are more utilitarian but I prefer drops and anyway my other 'new' bike this week has flat bars.

I've put drops and those brake levers that i bought from you on my iro and the brakes seem miles away! climbing on the hoods seems ok, but braking down hill it seems as though all of my weight is way over the front. still needs some bedding in time i think.

  • I prefer that position though, we all have different limb lengths or whatnot, I think I may have a long torso/arms and shorter legs, you may be the other way around, or it might indeed be just because it's a new position.
I agonize over stuff like that, like I said it took a week of riding before I was happy to cut the steerer down.

  • Agonize is the word...my girlfriend gives me 'the look' if i mention more handlebars, i have three or four different set ups going for the same bike at the mo, and just bought some bar ends for a fourth... I will find the perfect set up!

  • Ha, but yeah, it's a contact point. I doubt many people would wear shoes that don't quite feel right...

@Pistaboy - come back in, the water's lovely.
