  • Going to go skiing at the end of this month and am lacking clothes required. Am also lacking winter cycling gear. Anyway I can kill two birds with one stone and get some winter cycling gear that would also work well on the slopes?

  • base layers are good for both.. so is a double goretex shell if you get enough layers under it when skiing.

Condor were selling craft merino cross country ski socks in their sale which seems like a good idea too.

  • oh and glove liners. I wouldn't cycle in proper ski gloves though, too bulky

  • I wore my knee pads and hip protectors snowboarding. But i have found that helmets are a big no no. You cant wear cycling helmets on the slopes.

  • You need hip and knee pads riding around the city? I know you spend a bit of time on the asphalt but this is surely a bit of overkill..........

  • hehe

i just went skiing, and all i wore was a base layer, then a fleece, if i got cold i just put my outer waterproof on.
    all cycle gear

  • but then, i am a tramp

  • don't berghaus do stuff that's like all weather/all sport intensive?

  • most of the experienced skiers/instructors were wearing softshell jackets, so any cycle one would probably do

  • I've skied in my Pearl Izumi winter gloves, and my exte-ondo softshell gore wind-proof jacket when it wasn't too cold. Have also used my under helmet hat in my ski helmet.

Looks on skis are useless though.

  • ha, i also used my endura windproof gloves, no problemo

I dont really use the knee pads, but when its raining or icy i use the hip protector because i spend so much time on the asphalt. My next purchase will be POC long sleeve impact vest.

  • List?

    • Baselayers (longjohn's not so relevant)
    • glove liners
    • jacket
    • socks
    • *maybe *gloves

The only thing I'd say is with the jacket you might want to think about the time of year you're likely to go and where VS. what you'll use it for when cycling. If it's going to be fucking cold, then you might want something skiing with enough room for an extra baselayer or flease, while if you want your jacket close fitting on the bike it won't work.

However if you spend more and get some really good tecy baselayers - some very warm then this might be a nonpoint.

  • Cycling shorts stuffed with a chopped up camping matt make good pair of ghetto impact shorts. Thats what we used to do back in the day on the dryslopes before impact shorts were on the market

The bindings on my skis are made by look...

  • I used to have - 747s IIRC. The heel block split on the White Lady and nearly killed me.

    you need d3o:

  • I've got impact shorts but tbh they piss me off, bulky and uncomfortable. Good for keeping your bum warm on chairlifts though.

I only really wear them if I'm going to spend the day in the park learning something or if I'm going big for the day..

    a big +1
XC ski socks for winter cycling, running, and well XC skiing. I have around 8 pairs and wear them daily.

    Also, as mentioned, base layers,
and a decent buff or too

  • Swrve Milwaukee. that's got to be warm enough for the slopes?

  • I used to ride half-pipe religiously during my seasons away, and i have numerous "Pipe-Gloves" that are **ideal **for cycling. They have silicon/tacky finger tips (great for shifting/braking, but also for busting out a mean ol' method grab.... :), a snot wipe on the thumbs, and they are thin, yet warm and toasty.
    Pipe gloves FTW.

  • Swrve Milwaukee. that's got to be warm enough for the slopes?

Yep, I believe Ed took his skiing.

  • Heart rate monitors for hiking? Christ knows i've been caught short a few times, and i've burnt some calories getting out of awkward spots!

  • Swrve jumper?!

Cycle stuff is fine for light skiing to lunch and dicking around.

Wouldn't be caught dead off piste in deep powder without a proper technical outerlayer, snow skirt, integrated pants, proper gloves and a really good helmet. But then I would never hire skis and definitely NEVER hire boots.

Also if it hits -20 or starts throwing down heavy snow you're going to be fucked wearing a jumper/fleece and pipe gloves or endura gloves. Leather or goretex - or leather and gore tex (ftw)..
Remember it's the mountains, not London.
Like everything else, it depends how far you're pushing yourself and the gear.
