  • I've said it before, but healthy people in the obese category are few and far between, but dangerously unhealthy are prevalent.
    Even in the overweight category, muscular athletic people, from what I've experienced (and not from statistics, though I suspect they back this up too) are less prevalent than fat people.

    So, as much as you can say -'it's useless as a stat to measure health;, it's still the fastest and easiest and one of the more comparable ones that are available to clinicians.

    Until someone comes up with something better (or a better way of measuring fat %), BMI will stay.
