  • cyclists complaining about distance ;)

Come on we can bring our bikes inside and they have a track pump. In winter, the pub on a wednesday is popular whilst in the summer other things take priority such as spending time with your bike, riding and drinking.

  • Ah I'm only pulling your leg phil.

Until we went to the sovereign my plan was to winter at the Approach because they have patio heaters and a big awning over the outside space, and they let you take your bike in when they shut the garden at 10.

Plus the beer there is ace. HSB FTW

Are there any likely pubs on the island? we haven't been there yet.

  • the ship has just changed hands again. but no not suitable. kind of like of the sovereign. quiz night kind of place. yikes !

as i have mentioned to you previously your best bet is the ledger on west india quay. lovely listed building, quiet spot (no road noise), railings, no silly musac, cheap food, cheap and good beer and on a blue route.

but it is a tour location not a permanent home. because it is too far south.

imo we need to stay on tour and / or reget a central east location please.

    speak soon.

  • THERE ARE RULES

Pubs can only nominated by people at the drinks. We must be strict about these rules.

  • For what it's worth...

I really like the RS. The ub quiz is fun and I don't feel like it's gotten in the way of mtg talking utter bollocks, or riding my bike.
Eei has been banned from the old pub, which I stopped going to ages ago for being... Well, less than welcoming. Hey, souths is my beers and I have high standards.
I personally LOVE the captain Kidd. I would marry it if it was legal.
But, does it really qualify as an east pub? Is there some way to draw up a map of east London and find it's middle?

  • I don't think it has to be in the middle - define 'middle'
The Roman Rd is the self-proclaimed 'heart of the East End' and there are no good pubs there.
I don't think the river (or West India Quay) is too far south as the docks and environs are really the 'proper' east end, but the roads there can be dodgy. I think it might be fun to invade one of those suity wanker bars on the Canary Wharf estate and see just how quickly we can be evicted by security.

For me, the East End is bordered on the west by Shoreditch high st/Norton Folgate/Bishopsgate/Gracechurch St, the south by the river, the east by the A12 Blackwall Tunnel (close enough to the River Lea, east of which you are in Essex) approach and the north by a state of mind. Hackney will never be north london, even N postcode bits, and Islington isn't really east london, even the EC postcode bits.

  • Islington isn't really east london, even the E postcode bits.

Which E postcode is in Islington? Are you speaking of the EC codes?

  • How about the Queen Vic in Walford, that's east end proper. No food but the bar staff are entertaining, allways a scene or punch up on a friday. Beale's cafe is pretty good for a late night snack or there is always the chippy?

And if we look at the map of East London, you will find that E5 is equidistantly placed between North and South thus being described as central easts

  • Which E postcode is in Islington? Are you speaking of the EC codes?

    stupid small netbook keyboard

  • And if we look at the map of East London, you will find that E5 is equidistantly placed between North and South thus being described as central easts

In no part of any sensible discussion about the topography of London can Clapton be described as 'central' anything.

    murder central?

  • murder central?

All that stuff about the murder mile is a bit over-played. Ok, there was a reverse drive-by on the Lower Clapton Road, but there have been just as many killings in E8, 9 & N16.

  • Are they on Max's routes? Were roundhouse kicks involved?

  • Is hackney now da ghetto?

  • So when's the next one? And can newbies come along? I have a brane chockful of useless information that suddenly becomes useful in a pub quiz!

  • every wednesday, so the next one will be the 29th unless otherwise stated in this thread.

  • Is hackney now da ghetto?

    Sright bruv.

  • I quite like the Sov - the pub quiz is entirely optional although it does bring a lot more people in on Wednesdays (I went in on Thursday and it was almost empty).
The atmosphere is good, there are a couple of largeish tables available, the pizza is good and you don't have to leave the pub to get it and the pub quiz is optional -many people seem to turn up midway through or even after the end of the quiz and have a drink and shoot the breeze.
It's also convenient for me, so consider this heavily biased :)
Oh, and I quite like the Tribute beer they have - it's easy drinking

  • and you dont *have *to do the quiz

  • and if you're lucky you might end up in a gay bar playing table tennis...

  • and if you're lucky you might end up in a gay bar playing table tennis...

    fingers crossed

  • bah I'm jealous... won't be at easts till Jan 2011 ... god ...

    Ditto. Sad face.

  • and if you're lucky you might end up in a gay bar playing table tennis...

    fingers crossed

    Now that is selling it.

  • hi big ben et al,

you are not a minority of one.

i am not keen on the current arrangements.

Well, I think I've said it before and I'll probably say it again, but I didn't understand the reasons why we moved away from the Royal Inn--I didn't realise that Kris had been banned from there? I thought it was a very good location, with a bit of outside space to run around on bikes, obviously good beer, etc.

That said, the RS has several distinct advantages--judging from Souths' long tenure at the C&H and Wests' satisfaction with the Pear Tree and previously the Greyhound, until the situation there changed, what seems to work best for forum drinks is the sort of local pub that is probably a bit overlooked but has a responsive management, plus of course features like bikes inside, etc.

yes for one the quiz is a downer. if people want to do lfgss quiz team fine but dont hijack easts to do it.

I think in the warmer seasons that'll be much less of a problem. The forum mostly drinks al fresco, anyway, and those who want to do the quiz will be inside.

and secondly the sovereign is too far north. it is more like a north easts get together.

This is true--I've been plotting to start North-easts (not very seriously), but probably will if Easts moves away from there. Not sure on which night of the week, but it might make sense given that a lot of forum people now live around the area.

All that stuff about the murder mile is a bit over-played. Ok, there was a reverse drive-by on the Lower Clapton Road, but there have been just as many killings in E8, 9 & N16.

True. That was a stupid label applied by the Hackney Gazette. The shootings were mostly drug-related (I think there were three or four gangland murders) or on the dancefloor in the Palace Pavilion and Chimes nightclubs that have since been closed down. I've always felt perfectly safe in the area, and I've lived there for fourteen years.

  • A north easts may slightly detract from norths and easts but hey it is a free country so if people want to go for it then do it.

All I would suggest is avoid tuesdAys nights norths and wednesday night easts.
