@ Rive Gauche. Happy to find out a bit more about it from my old man if you'd like? I'm in on his cask so wouldn't take part, but very happy to offer any info we have thus far. Ours is about 4 or 5 years old so far. We're in it for 10 years, then we may quarter cask part of it for a bit longer.
Some stuff to remember is that it doesn't work out as quite the amazing bargain it looks (11 squid a bottle) as I think there's no bottles included or indeed bottling (I'll check). Also there may be some duty to pay on receipt of the hooch. Plus there's some evaporation from the barrel during aging (known as 'angel share').
I'll ask the old man how it pans out. I definitely recall us getting in there when Bruichladdich had just reopened and we bagged a massive bargain. A lot less than the money they're asking now!

I have just realised that the whisky you'd get from a scheme like this would be cask strength though, so it goes a little further!

Penderyn. I really wanted to like this, not least as I had a 1/2 bottle all to myself courtesy of a well-meaning friend.
Unfortunately, I have to say I really didn't like it. Just...well...not very nice at all to be frank.
Anyone else tried it?
P.S. I am not Welshist.

probably 40 US gallons, which is 320 US pints, or about 266 UK pints, or about 152 litres
It depends where they came from. 225 litres is common for French wine barriques, bourbon barrels can be smaller but those from sherry makers can be bigger.

Right... Here's what I've learned for all you potential whisky owners...
The up front cost is the spirit, barreling, storage for 10 years.
Bottling, Duty and VAT is later...(!)
The 2k one is the extra peaty one. There's a cheaper option at 1200 apparently. (My Dad got lucky and did it early on for a lot less - more like 800 quid apparently).
It's a bourbon barrel, we think about 190 litres. It reduces as I said over time but is diluted at bottling so stretches out some (unless you request that it remains cask strength). We're looking at almost 250 70cl bottles.
I'm afraid that's as much use as I can be at the moment, but it's enough info to decide whether you want to get into a dialogue about it with the distillery. For my money, there's not much nicer than a Bruichladdich at 10 years from one of their Bourbon barrels. If you're Laphroig lovers it's a more sophisticated, less pokey version of that.
Whiskey galore!

I can't recommend a peaty malt as I think they taste like a detol drinking cats piss. For me heaven on earth is Aberlour A'Bunadh [£31.99 from Oddbins]. 60%ABV single malt and cycling, awesome combo!

Had some of this earlier at my cousin's place (Taiwanese wifey)
Very mild to my taste - it was as though it had had a dash of water but it hadn't.
I reckon I could've finished the bottle, but Highgate Hill after that would've been interesting...
Not sure I can recommend it, but it wasn't at all unpleasant. I just think I've had more flavourful, nicer bottles elsewhere (Balvenie doublewood, Suntory Yamazaki 12yo, Macallan 18yo spring to mind).

Are there any decent whiskey bars around that aren't shit pubs, whence we could all get together and get pretentiously wasted?
