The homophobic side has always bothered me but then most of the musicians I like seem to be flawed. Does it detract from the music?

Sure it does. They're not just melodies, they're songs with lyrics.
I've got these days, when I listen to all the preachy and angry tracks and think, does it really make sense? Is it really more arty than a slack tune about punanny?

Anyway, what I'm saying is, it's all about our taste and opinions. A complex matter.

And it's a bad form to slag a fellow musician - especially if one really knows his/her craft/art, only because we think it's not edgy, arty, successful, original enough.

And no, I'm not gonna flounce, because someone straigthened their hair.
