  • loving the snow! it makes the pavements feel like a trail ride! hope it stays for a while

Get that pic of you riding in the snow posted on here, Tom!

Did you ride in this morning?

    How fucking cold was it!

Cable tie snow tyres look cool - do they work well?

For clear ice cubes, boil the tap water first. De-oxygenates it you see so no bubbles. And don't play on frozen lakes kids.

I've tried this and it didn't work. I believe you have to used distilled water and in some cases special trays or a slow cooling process.

  • Uk water is full of chalk. So distillation sounds like the best bet.

I think it just helps break out some dissolved air, if you did manage to de-oxygenate the molecules you'd end up with just hydrogen.

Oh well, back to the Perrier for me then...

Yes, of course, my meaning being releases dissolved oxygen, not affecting the actual molecules.

  • i think it just helps break out some dissolved air, if you did manage to de-oxygenate the molecules you'd end up with a super power soure that would revolutionise world energy production.

  • Did anyone see that feature on Siberia on the bbc website. -53 or something similar.
He does this awesome demonstration with a jug of really hot water, by throwing it up in the air and it turns into snow because it's so cold.

  • The coldest spot in Norway is nearly always Kautokeino, where -50 is quite frequent during winter.

Someone always turns up on telly doing the throw boiling water above your head, get covered in snow trick.

  • I dream of the day that they feck it up.

  • wish i had the time/patience to set my bike up like this. i'm sick of getting the bus everywhere since the snow came down here. there's 200-300 screws in each tyre.

I was thinking about this the other day actually, if we had that kind of winter here what else would it affect?

For example, would all our water pipes freeze?

  • Yes.

  • throroughly enjoyed a roll down through Royal parks today, a mess around the Anish Kapoor sculptures in Hyde park, just lovely to be in there, roads in centre fine.
back around the local roads here its carnage on the ice, got a nice egg growing on the elbow after a fall as well, that ^ bike is super stable though.

  • Rear slick, front cyclocross, work brilliantly, brakeless mean I'm less likely to get a front wheel slips;

How to you stop the screw heads pinching/puncturing the tube?

  • Magnets.

  • Even I resorted to using the Mountain Bike after sliding everywhere on Monday, my second geared ride in four years, it still had mud on it from 2005 :)

I have some studded tyres on order for the Tri-Cross but they are on back order.

  • They have a bedding in time, where the studs can get pulled out. After that if you're usinf carbide tipped studs, they last quite well. The trouble is that the ride is nasty on bare tarmac. They roll poorly, make a lot of noise, and vibrate. Riding spikes on old hard pack snow is pretty special though.

Yeah, I like the width in the drops when off-road/ winter cycling. But have the tilted up for a nice hoods position for cruising.

    Not pretty but darn useful.

    I love this :D

  • Magnets.

    but seriously...

  • Old tubes if you've done a DIY job.
