That's from Wikipedia/Yahoo answers and it's rubbish - November 1 as the start of winter?! Winter begins technically 21 December, but is generally considered as 1 December onwards. They just said this on Radio 4 so it must be true.
Hey, I said it wasn't winter. Don't blame the messenger.

Going up hills, into a headwind, in the snow, at night, giving it some game face is what makes winter awesome.
Great post :)

21st december is the shortest day/winter solstice, so surely that would be the middle of winter?
I guess that would make june 21st/summer solstice that middle of summer too.
i think this makes sense to me. nov/dec/jan = winter, may june july = summer.
all others are spring autumn. -

Today was my first ever commute on fixed in the snow. It went pretty well. Not sure how much my nerve will last if the snow mounts up, but my Marathon Winters haven't been delivered yet, and they won't fit the fixed. Soon as I have them, I'm swapping over.

Its the ice you need to be careful of. The snow is fine as long as It's not ice underneath, riding in snow is just like riding in rain, until it gets to 3 ft deep then It's crazy!

I have built this website which will hopefully help people decide if they should ride in or not.
Hope it's useful - all feedback welcome.

When it snowed in Amsterdam, they always issue warning to those with motorised vehicles about driving in the snow and the like, but they never once mentioned cyclists, simply because they'll be alright, even on a dutch bike with a somewhat skinny tyres (compared to a cyclocross tyres of course).
lovely to hear that you show them another way of going around town in the snows.
Not strictly true Ed. First big snowfall here yesterday, and most of my colleagues ditched their bikes in favour of the tram. The people on Dutch bikes I saw on my way in today were all riding pretty tentatively too. I've put together a winter high-pro which simply kicks ass. 24" rear wheel, 26" front, solid as a rock with nice fat tyres. Why I struggled through last winter with a granny bike I have no idea.

Yep, at least during cold and/or icy weather. I intend to fill it with as much useful information as possible, such as 'HTFU', 'get on your bike you pansy' and where to purchase a girl's blouse.

Anybod having issues with frozen locks?
I have a cable for my front and the padlock is easy to defrost with one of those lock deicers, but my kryptonite evo is a bugger.
It freezes inside the mechanism and the spray doesn't seem to spread further than the lock.
Don't really fancy carrying a thermos round.I can imagine if I poured hot water on and then rode home in -15 the lock would be a block of ice when I get back! I nearly broke my teeth on a frozen snickers this morning and now I'm having a semi frozen banana! -

Urinate on it.
Then again, that might give you a semi frozen banana.

You could try sitting it on a radiator all night (or in an oven on a keep warm setting) to dry it out inside. Pour as much oil inside as you can through the key hole to prevent any more water getting inside. Then keep it in an air tight bag for transportation (ziplock or just clingfilm would do). Might just keep it dry enough to not turn solid when it does go sub-zero.

i am slightly thinking my 23's are a wee bit small and slippy for the wet.
back to the cross tyres methinks, thank goodness the surly takes 35's.
love riding in the snow.
hate the black gloopy gunk that is everywhere.
kind of want to clean my bike after every trip but that would just be foolish. -
