Finished the '85 Claud Butler Canyon at the weekend. One day I will bung on the big fat tyres and use this as a street cruiser (I'm 43, not sure 'street cruising is still possible for me mind) but for now I wanted to build it as factory spec (bar the new tyres, seatpost and saddle)...

Excellent bike, fat tyres are perfectly fine for everyday riding, rather than just for 'crusing' down your local pubs, they're superbly comfortable and roll really smoothly that it doesn't feel like an effort to keep the bike moving (especially on bad road surface).
My bike is based on 1980's MTB geo with a few tweak (Eccentric BB, disc etc.), and it run fat tyres (Fat Frank 2.35), currenty waiting for the Alfine 11 speed hubs so I can make the most out of it, you can also get the Big Apple if you don't like the look of the FF;
(front tyre's is only temporary so I can go off the beaten path at the time).

Ha, I think they look cool!
Is it you that has the 80's Stumpjumper with the white tyres? That looks uber cool :) -

ed - is your bike ever parked up outside the art gallery in conway street opposite the abortion clinic? sure i see it, or one just like it there everytime i go for worksy drinks. it's the tyres. always the tyres.

I don't think I even locked it up there, I have no business of being in that particular area, however the bike shop that supply the Retrovelo is nearby actually (velorution).
@ wired, no that wasn't mine it was a reference for the Fat Frank tyres.

Anyhow, the Mafac "Racer" have arrived, need a bit of polishing up;

Since I'm trying to build the lightest 50's bike possible (without losing reliablity), I weighted the brake (with pads and cable) and it's pretty much on par with the Paul Racer (160g without pads), and that wasn't Mafac's lightest (the "Raid" is).

Slowly getting together;

Need to think about the saddle, there are old leather saddle that are lighter than the Brooks (alu rail instead of steel), just have to source it/horde JD.
Just need rims, hubs (which is coming soon, turn out it's an old freehubs thus enabling me to screw on 3 fixed cogs instead, result!), big fuck-off lamp to put on the fork, possibly mudguard, rims, saddle, tyres, handlebar, pedals and bolt for the seatpost.

Retrovelo without the 11 speeds hubs, incidentally they already released it recently.

sorry for such a lame question, but i couldn't find it on the search,
can i put a shimano 600 tricolour crankset on a modern campagnolio veloce bottom bracket?

Nice bike, quite liking the idea of hub gears for next years bike.

There's an internal 3 speed disc hubs out there too, was very tempted to get it but realised it would be useless as I'll change it for the 11 speeds anytime soon.
trouble was, I could've got it back in July and the 11 speeds hubs is reported to be here by Feb...
Anyhow, 3 speed derailleur is much lighter than a 3 speeds internal hubs, lighter by 400g.

If they are both square taper, then yes. Although you may have issues with chainline depending on how long the BB is. In theory you shouldn't mix JIS (Shimano +asian manufacturers) with ISO (Campag +european), but in practice it shouldn't really make much of a difference. -

Henry, i was recently looking into CX bikes, and nearly pulled the trigger on a Boardman - not the most glamorous of brands, but for the money it was hard to beat, and had the nicest ride of all teh bikes i tried.
Only reason i didnt get it was an impulse snowboard buying session got in the way.

ahh. those bastard impulse buying sessions.
This week, me and a mate are building Snow Bikes (tm).
Probably....
we've got a welder and we're not afraid to use it, need some donor bikes and some donor skateboards.
thats a good suggestion. might pop into the massive halfords and see. -

They keep having 200 quid off weekend events - it was at 799 a couple of weeks ago, back up to 999 now, but no doubt will be reduced again.

I binned some of those when I had to move out on foot, how annoying. Great project, I'm jealous.

grrrr......Well, they are going in to production in summer 2011, will be ready in autumn I hope. While I'd like to just be able to take every idea in my head and turn it in to a production frame, as a small owner operated business I unfortunately don't have deep enough pockets to do so. In the end it came down to a decision between keeping existing models in stock or bringing out something new. In the end I though it was best to do the former.
