ticketwise, internal flights one-way in US are not really more expensive than return, it's only a case on overseas flights.

Re. bikes : Get a bike box and just say it's artwork, or " just bike parts, NOT a bicycle"

Delta is the worst on bikes : $170 on internal flights.We managed to get away with it every time though, just make sure it's not the biggest sized box and that it's not over luggage weight limit.

a lot of american/canadian airlines take hockey equipment free, and a bike will fit in a hockey goalie bag
