The metal in the alu frame weighs less per volume, but they use more of it on a alu frame due to the fact it doesn't fatigue so well.
Mitre can correct me if im wrong, but a similar design of alu & steel frames would weigh about the same. I believe they get around this issue with oversize tubes.
