  • Good to see physix peeps in da house. (Or good fakesters, cause I don't know shite about physix).

OK, physix peeps, here's an ethix question:

Say, you met the devil at the X-roads and he/she offered you the most comprehensive human understandable true theory of the Universe...

...and the price is just x percent chance of world ending. For which values of x, would you take the offer?

    Personally I'd take 5%.
    50% if it's guaranteed painless.

    br,
    Unkla Whip

  • Surely that's ethics rather than physics?

    #iamnotascientist

  • I would say, "if x is the same chance of ending the world as the millions collisions of cosmic ray decays which occur in the mesosphere every day, and at far higher energy than the 14TeV being attempted by man, then yes, fill me in".

    #I'mnotquitearealscientistyetandnotinparticlephysics

  • so the LHC finally got up and running, the smashes have happened the world didn't end

what now ? pat each other on the back and go home or do they still have shit they need to discover ?
did they find a higgs boson
    new particles
    find old ones ?

  • Don't think they're at the full 14TeV yet

  • The real stuff is supposed to start happening over the next few months.

I was listening to an interview with a physicist (on Quirks and Quakes, a CBC radio show) on which he was asked how the world of physics has changed in the last 35 years (the length of time the radio show, originally hosted by David Suzuki, has been on the air). Unlike the other experts in different science fields who were asked the same question, his answer was: it really hasn't. The standard model, surprisingly to most physicists apparently, has not been proven wrong. Yet. He believes (and claims that almost everyone else expects that same) that in the next few months, thanks to the LHC, things will change.

I don't know what any of that means really. Sounded important though.

  • forget the higgs boson

there's a new particle in town ( well realtively new - just 75years in the hunting ) and they've glimpsed it

    Majorana fermion http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17695944

  • "...a particle that could be its own anti-particle". Fuck off, science.

  • forget the higgs boson

Looks like I need a new cat.

  • If Majorana particles exist, it's likely neutrinos have mass. Would affect a lot of cosmology.

  • If Majorana particles exist, it's likely neutrinos have mass. Would affect a lot of cosmology.

True, but the current limits on neutrino mass come from cosmological measurements, this would really be further confirmation.

And the photon and the Z are also their own antiparticle, but that's nothing to get too worried about, 'anti-matter' is a lot less exotic than people imagine.

  • Dammit, they may have found your cat.

I have mixed feelings, excitement at the fact that we may have found the 'God Particle' and hilarity at the fact that they did the slides in Comic Sans.

  • I want to know what Scoble "reckons".

  • i reckons he reckons the hadron collider needs mudguards ... and a rack

  • it all depends on its effective top tube length

  • Moar SPACERS!!!!!!!!!!

  • it all depends on its effective top tube length

Which you could compensate for with a different stem.

    actually excited about this

  • 'Its not fast enough'

    'increase the tyre width'

    'Eureka!'

  • Higgs Bogan!
