I'd take a punt and say that that tactic is probably only good for the short term and with a cheapish lock - they're taking a punt on leaving a £50 lock on a bike for a number of hours with a high probablility of it having been cut off or the police informed by the time they get back. Obviously this could be wrong and it would be a total pain if it did happen.
Wasn't there a story on here of this happening and putting out a help request for a saw to chop it off?!
