My immediate thought upon reading this was of the turquoise turtle. I 'invented' (read, discovered through trial, error and a desire for symmetry) it when I was a nipper at primary school.

seeing as there is so much interest you make a standard shoelace knot starting with the first loop, when making the second loop you put that back under and though the hole you just made- thus strengthening it up.
