you are right, anything that takes control away from the user is very annoying, much like pop-ups. The reason i ask is that it's to showcase art, and i want the site to replicate a gallery. So the concept was to respect the images shown by having nothing near the images to give them a certain respect, i thought the mouse thing could be an idea of doing that.
