Also chip in with the avoid Gatwick advice but...
A small modification to balmain's route is instead of turning right at Brighton Rd go straight on on Victoria Rd past Horley Station and onto the B2036. that way you get across the railway line without having to either go inside the airport or negotiate the dual carrigeway. The map shows where on that road the gate to get in and out the airport is.
Don't rely on being able to stop at Gatwick. When we did this route in May we were allowed into the airport but they were still a bit suspicious and had to radio for clearance from their seniors, on a different day you might get a different answer.
