• Just ordered 2 of the MD80's with 2 MicroSD cards for a front and back facing, jury friendly, justice serving solution. I feel better about cycling again already.

It's great because it not only helps me with hard evidence if I need it, it could help others in front or behind me too, something I'm gonna be only too willing to help with if needed.

  • @hanson

where do you plan on putting them?
i'd be a bit worried mounting them to the bike unless you run big tires at a low pressure
road buzz/vibrations will ruin the footage
helmet, head gear or body mounted would be a better option

  • And the knockoff MD80s have, in my experience, tended to quit working very quickly. I'm beginning to suspect that buying things from China at 10% of the price is associated with a reduction in quality control.

I bought 2. One winked out fairly quickly I suspect as a result of charging it with the very dodgy charging units you get (very quickly went "funny" and left me with exposed wires!) The other has been fine to be honest. It has even weathered torrential rain with only a bit of clingfilm wrapped around it - this was before I made my home made perspex housing .

I reckon that given the cost £10 vs £80 I think if only 6 fail I've still saved a few bob.

    +1 Bought one off ebay for 1p, but £7.99 p&p !

  • filled out a report on the website yesterday for a taxi sitting on my wheel then doing the same for others in Kennington.

Just got a call back from a guy called Mark. Hoping to take it further, get it marked down on his record at the Taxi office.

  • Really? That's the first time I've heard of someone getting a call back, and the next day even. That sounds relatively minor, not knocking you for reporting it, but it seems surprising. I reported a minivan that actually hit my messenger bag with his wing mirror as he passed me on a corner and never heard back.

Is it because it's a taxi or are they following up now?

  • they have called me back when i contacted them

further up people noted that the system does not always accept the complaints...

  • I did get a case number emailed me the next day so I assume that went through fine. Maybe that email was in lieu of a phone call.

Or maybe it's because I'm a foreigner. Racists.

  • This guy said he was doing off his own back for a few hours a week. Confusion about the system and he got a forwarded email or something.

It's pretty minor. Wish someone had taken it seriously when someone tried to kill me with a BMW but them's the breaks.

  • I had an incident on Marshwall this morning which was a bit unpleasant. The stretch of road around the Brittania hotel is a pain as there are always cars/taxis/buses parked to the side of the road and a corner that is blinder than it seems.

This morning I was cycling on it and moved more into the lane to discourage any passing at that corner. I knew a car was behind me, I'd already seen him but he decided at that point to pass even though there was a car coming the other direction. He got alongside of me and started to come over towards me as there wasn't enough room in the road.

I smacked his window, not out of aggression but in a 'fuck you're going to hit me, are you even looking' way. He then makes the angry face, pulls back and then as soon as possible pulls alongside me and intentionally swerves at me to intimidate me. Then he rolls down the window and keeps yelling 'leave the car alone' until he drives off.

Anyway, the point is that I have his registration plate and it was clearly a company vehicle as it had an excel logo on the back window. I'd like to write them a strongly worded email about this incident but can't find their details. Searches for excel and London just give me the exhibition centre and it wasn't them. The logo was blue letters and the x was made up of a red and blue slash if I'm remembering accurately. Any way to use the registration number to find the company address?

  • here's a long list if you've got some time on your hands.
    possibly http://www.excel.co.uk/ ?

  • Cheers for the tips. I'm pretty sure that excel.co.uk might fit the bill, which makes me feel a bit stupid for not simply trying that address instead of googling excel. It was a silver sedan style car with a vanity plate that ended in EXL so that sounds like something the Excel Executive service would do.

Now to find the contact info, crack my knuckles and type strong words.

  • I'm sure you can find out which company it belong to by checking the numberplate?

  • People seem to do that, but I have no idea how. I've entered it into google, tried searching it with registration plate and get nothing.

I don't like to put plates in a public thread, but it was 5 digits: Gee Nine EXL. How can I use that to find the company?

  • no idea, but I stuck the number in at askmid and that says it's a volvo s80, which would fit with the executive stock that excel run.
    (http://www.excel-executive.com/executive_car_hire.html innit)

  • Small world.
This exact car just passed me as I headed under Hyde Park Corner.
    Same reg, silver volvo s80.
The logo belongs to excel.co.uk for sure.
    Good luck!

  • Hah, amazing. London not so big after all. Good work :)

  • Ooh I like this thread. I have reported 2 idiot bus drivers for hassling me on my commute. Both were disciplined and had to write me a letter of apology (separate occasions). That may sound harsh and petty for me to tell tales, but a bus is several tonnes - get hit by a car you may live, hit by a bus and it’s good night! These guys are professional drivers with 40 odd people on their vehicle – they carry a lot of responsibility, so sitting on my back wheel in a 30 zone when I’m doing 28mph – revving his engine, and forcing his way past, only to stop to pick up 10 meters down the road and then to repeat the process is crazy. I now have a helmet cam which I bought off eBay (£40) – So if I am hit I have proof. Last week some tool in a 911 was wheel spinning and mini drifting on a main road at 6pm. Crazy

Had this this morning on OKR.. Driver tried to "halfwheel" me in the bus lane. Cut me up at the bus stop. I let it go.. He came back round me and cut in again. Stopped at traffic light. "Calm down love" I say to him. He points at his forehead... ? "Just calm down love. No point in speeding past me only to pull in. Give your passengers a better ride and try not to kill anyone".

  • Hi all. Wonder if I could ask the forum some advice.

A friend of mine was knocked off her bike this afternoon near Chelsea Docks. She was on a roundabout, and a car entered directly in front of her path, leaving her nowhere to go but into the side of it.

She's a bit bruised and shaken, and her bike (thankfully her beater) has a couple of scratches on it, but fortunately it looks like there's been no serious harm done. I'm going to make sure she goes to hospital for a check-up, as she said she hit her head, and concussions can be sneaky like that.

The driver(though he didn't volunteer any details) was very apologetic, and said he'd thought she was turning off the roundabout (the dick). My friend just wanted to get away from the scene as soon as possible, and didn't think about reporting it or getting any details.

I've pointed her at the "What to do..." thread for future reference: any point in taking this further, or reporting it, do you think?

    Cheers.

  • report it, and report it as soon as possible.

you never know if the driver is being apologetic and tried to claim she's in the wrong by reporting to the police ASAP.

Also insurance's a necessity, especially if she needed to go to hospital.

  • Cheers edscoble. Will pass that on. Not sure much can be done about it now, but even if it only ends up as a stat, it might help down the line.

  • what I've noticed is that vehicle drivers cannot bear to slow down a shade and wait to overtake even if I'm in primary position. If I were a car driving at less than 30mph,they'd do so but it seems like it's illegal to do so when behind a bicycle.I desperately wish I could shoot paint stripper 50 metres from a special gland in my forehead half a dozen times a day...
