  • OK, that's quite enough counter-examples now.

  • Malcolm.

    Wicked.

  • One of the rather frustrating, if not actually 'unfriendly' aspects of this forum is the off-topic and 'funny' thread hi-jacking. A small minority of very vocal people do treat the forum like a small IRC channel (people without whom the forum would be dull, I am the first to admit).
For people who just check in in the evening, see a thread they think they might like to contribute too, then see that in the 4 hours since the OP there are 5 pages of one line, one word or one photo 'funny' items being batted between 4 or 5 members, it seems like a pointless and futile exercise to try to add to the original theme. I like a bit of internet debate, or silly arguement, but the speed of descent of a lot of threads means I rarely do here. When I do I fear I come across as a tedious bore. Sorry about that.

Maybe everythread should have a parallel twin for irrevelent frippery, leaving the main thread open for discussing the OP, even after the regulars have decided there is no more mileage in it.

  • You should just contribute what you want to contribute; you never really know what people appreciate (unless they bother to rep you) but probably what you have to say will be read and appreciated more than you think. Only by contributing can you influence what the forum is.

Aye, it is what it is, and that's partly why it go the label "The world's most unfriendly bike forum."

This forum inspired me to build my first frame, taught me an awful lot about mechanical bits and bobs and introduced me to the Tweed Run, all of which I am immensely grateful for. I have seen, and received great generorsity from members who I hadn't met before. All this is Good Thing.

It seems a terrible shame to see a Good Thing get a bad reputation, and while the banter I refered to is not nasty or unfriendly, it is intimidating (in an immediate sense, rather than a sinister one) and it is disrespectful to the OP. I would like people to consider that more, that is all.

There, you see, I am being a tedious bore again. Sorry.

(Cue picture of the Interwebs being a Serious Business).

  • Probably.

In fact, I think the key to self-moderation is to hit people hard.

    I'm far too forgiving.

But as I'm becoming increasingly intolerant of the "It wasn't me", "He started it" and "It just a joke, can no-one take a joke" I'm also going to let go of my tendancy to be forgiving.

I really think it's smarter of me to just ban people for good and for everyone else to see that and act accordingly.

So there's the fair warning to everyone. Attack a newbie without what the vast majority would consider to be fair cause, and I'm going to kick you hard. If you've already been kicked in the past, then I'm going to ban permanently.

And within that simple statement, perhaps people will try and help newbies rather than tear them new asssholes.

As at the moment you seem to treat people equally. Yes I know its your forum, but isn't claiming to be impartial and then seemigly not acting that way

It's not an idea. It's a statement. That's how it now is.

If anyone pounces on a newbie without fair cause, then someone can report it and I ban swiftly and without stopping to hear the pleas for mercy.

That's not to say that no newbie can ever be called out on, it's to say that for the vast majority of newbie baiting that has existed, that just won't now be tolerated. But when we do have the case of, say, a dumb bike thief trying to sell something or an obvious troll... then fair game, go for it.

The line will be, what the forum reasonably thinks is OK. Which will mostly be me listening to BDW on that, or the consensus of people who aren't inclined to report stuff.

Is there a definitive forum definition for a troll, as there seem to be confusion. Will it include tagging?

I was hoping that those involved wouldn't read it and I could just ban them.

Well you can do that anyway or just make it difficult for them to log in/post with the infamous forum hack.

  • the banter is what keeps me coming back, even if only as a grinning observer...

people fill in the dull moments between imparting knowledge and great advice by talking shit... if you want a question answered, ask it... if you ask a stupid question, you might get some shit, but its probably only because you should have done some independent research before asking.

    keep on keeping on, folks...

meanwhile, theres boobs and muff on bbc one... brb.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't like to see it end. Would be awful it this became one of those desperately dry and serious cycling forums. I just think it could be reigned in (by the members, not the moderators).

Any way, why hasn't this been merged with: http://www.lfgss.com/thread28045.html

  • Kill the weak...

  • Will the banned peoples posts be deleted? as well as quoted posts?

  • must not feed the troll.

  • Is the troll over weight?

  • he's a bit tubby round the middle from eating all those cakes and ice cream. luckily, those two trips up mount ditchling this weekend will help shift those inches.

  • I still lurk but never post (only occasionally in the house music thread). It went a bit wrong for me when the functionality was added where you could click to 'rep' peoples posts thus bringing a whole new culture in. Even when it was removed people would say 'repped'. Then it becomes/became like internet point scoring. Culture still exists.

seriously, did you get bullied at school?

  • ^^neg rep'd

  • Does anyone know if Balki's gone to Oz yet?

  • Not yet, he's borrowing my bike box...
