I suppose your right, everyone's needs are different. For me it's CPU, GFX, MOBO upgradable (only applicable in desktops)and DDR3 and x64 Win7 Pro (or higher)
With a laptop if you need HDMI or firewire for example, you need to make sure you have it on the one you buy.
Screen size also, for me 15.4 is plenty big.
