Just about finished the raleigh beater/commuter last night. sorry about the crap phone pic. it was late and the light wasn't great.... and i'd drunk at least a couple of those bottles in the background there.
it's an old Raleigh frame. Not sure of the tubing. It's not 531, maybe 501. It’s not mega light but will be plenty tough i'm sure. Built it up with miche hubs, mavic open pros, new shimano b/b and stronglight headset. I recycled the campag cranks, gebhardt chainring off my old path racer, have a sweet suntour superbe chainring to go on when I get a new cog. Also reused the long reach (too long!) calipers, mudguards (gilles berthoud) and saddle off another bike.
Other new bits are the the Raleigh bars, 3ttt stem, and new tektro brake levers. Did the grips with recycled brooks leather tape from an old bike. Going to fit flats and clips at some point so I can ride to work/the pub in normal shoes.
The chrome mudguards where a huge pain the ar5e to re-fit. You have to cut and drill them to fit and because this bike is a different size and shape from the old one I had to re-fettle them all over the place. There’s much less clearance to fit them on this frame anyway because it’s build for 700c rather than 27”s. As a result of that and fat-ish 28mm tyres I had to do all sorts of things like saw off bolts and drill, cut and file out brackets. They still rubbed pretty badly so i had to do a fair bit of indelicate levering and bending to get them off the tyres.
Last downside is an insane amount of clattering from the mudguard on the frame round the bottom bracket. Have managed to rig something up with leather bartape on the seat tube and foam pads from inside a helmet on the chainstays but it looks ugly so i'm going to have to find another way of keeping it still and quiet. ]
Maiden voyage this morning was pleasant enough. Need to change seat posts as that one tends to pitch the seat down at the nose which isn't too comfortable for me. Other than that though it performed wonderfully.
Now i just need an old fashioned bell.

Some progress on the Obree build
Are you gonna have a shot at the hour record on it? Seriously, is it gonna be ridden regularly? Great project, looks awesome.

This is my Neil Orrell Tourer from 1979
531 Special Touring TubingI aim to do some decent touring miles this year and next.....due to my work rota, I get 4 days off regularly so will start with some 4 dayers wild camping with a 1 man tent......
Its been out on a couple of shakedown rides loaded up with panniers and now has my brooks B17 special fitted.....
It is very stable and handles superbly when loaded......

Thanks Guys.....
I'll check if its benotto.... I'm not sure to be honest. It is fine on the hands, although I use leather gloves( ride hard ones) so that would help......And I'm keeping hold of the turbo for now!!

Picked up this rather neglected Mercian a few weeks back and looking forward to restoring it-it's full 531 professional tubing, nice lugless fillet brazed construction and despite a totally seized BB that has now been dissolved (the paint was really scabby and had been badly touched up over the BB anyway) there is a rather nasty dent in one of the stays which I'm a bit concerned about but should be ok.... I really like the pearlescent white with blue mercian stickers though-normally I prefer the gothic end of the spectrum-so I may re-do this with powdercoat as opposed to enamel.
I do however need to figure out what to do with the forks as the chrome has peeled pretty badly on a couple of spots and I don't know how well they'll take a powdercoat or if it'd look really scabby and uneven. Chances of buying a new pair off Mercian for 120 are slim as much as I'd like to...
Right,
Mercian just got back to me saying it'll be about 260 for a re-furb (not including new forks ;( ) which I can't afford. Between the dent and the need for a new paint-job, I'm now wondering if it would be total sacriledge to just do a cheap but decent hammerite job on it myself and use it as my winter bike?

Hey, I've been working on my old Kona Lava Dome 1996. Finally finished it the other day. Here are some before and after pics.

Tried to keep as many of the parts original.
Cheers.

ALl that attention to detail on top quality components, but then you spoil the drivetrain by using a DMR style tensioner.
-

Yeah that's really nice, shame you had to use a tensioner.

Yeah, I guess the recession hit me there. I had this spare from something else and decided to use it. Will change it over at some point. Any suggestions to of what to change it to. Only thing I think of would be Surley singulator...

you can buy eccentric bottom brackets that fit in a regular shell (i think you put and external bb into it) or an eno hub?
...or halflinks...or file the dropout...or get new dropouts...have you used a magic gear calculator?

if it work, it's fine, just lose one more link to make it more secure.
that Kona look so wrong, it's so right.

Cheers n3lson. I have looked at the whiteindustries ecentric hub, but to be honest, this was supposed to be a cheap conversion. Will check out the BB though. Didn't spend a great amount on parts. Wanted to get this built so I can start on a proper fixie / ss bike to commute on.
Thanks again.
