Get a compass. Does the BB affect it? If not, get a big magnet to the BB, then run the test again with the magnet.
If at any point the compass is affected, then you have something with a lot of something that's not Ti in it.
Try measuring conductivity. Ti is about 3% that of copper, as does stainless, but they look very different. Al, for example, is about 30%
