I don't have a retail tiger disk, but should have a grey disc set that came with my macbook.. Can check if you want it, though I'm out west..
But if you just want to run disk utility to check for filesystem errors, I think you could do this w/ a (snow) leopard disk just as well. Clicking noises, not a good sign! Might want to see if you can boot to target disk mode and try to get your files first thing.
