• When I was in a deaf boarding school (1997-2004), naturally at the time, caning, harsh punishment, etc. weren't enforced, as they have a better method of punishing the student;

    Depriving us from thing/activity that we hold dear.

    This work very well, one example is no television for a month, that doesn't sound bad, but remember this is a boarding school in the middle of nowhere, and if you don't like playing football, cricket, cycling in the nearby forest, swimming, etc. it work effectively.

    If you're keen on playing football after school (we have a little league organised by the prefect of our 'house'), you'll be banned from that for a certain amount of time, and not only that, the other player will hate you for getting in trouble to not play football with them.

    Smacking does work, but there are much more effective way of punishing children, and that's to deprive them of certain thing that they hold dearly, it can be something as simple as missing their favourite tv programme.
