That's my route home but I usually go up kingsland rd instead when it's dark, think I'll stick to that

There was a spate of similar attacks there a few years ago. I'll forward a warning. Really sorry to hear that you were a victim, Synthetics! Heal up fast!

If this happens repeatedly, can't the police send out a decoy on bike to lure the fuckwits out?

I was attacked on my bike at 2am a few weeks ago on De Beauvoir Rd and Northchurch Rd. A guy sprints out of the shadows from the other side wearing a balaclava, pushes me into a high curb, I fly headfirst into a wall and him and another balaclava'd accomplice kick the shit out of me as I'm on the floor. They threaten to stab me, steal my bag and my bike (old Peugeot steel frame custom build - not worth much). End up in A&E with fractured toe and lots of skin missing from multiple limbs. Police told me there's been over 15 similar attacks on this stretch of road in 2 months. Guess I don't need to spell out that's it's a good idea to avoid this route home at night.
Suck big time. Hope you heal quickly. Hope you don't mind but I've cross posted this into the polo forum as it's literally a couple of hundred yards away from one of our polo courts. -

grim, i ride through that area at all sorts of times a few times a week.

Thanks all. Yeah feel free to distribute the post - hope it helps prevent something similar happening to anyone else...

OK - who wants to be the bait, while the other 30 of us hang around out of sight...

Bring it on! I'm concussed already!

...that route through De Beauvoir is in the TFL cycle guide. It's quiet and there's no CCTV. I went back to the place a week ago and from where the guy must have been hiding you can see bike lights approaching from at least 300m away at the canal bridge so plenty of time for them to get in position and wait... calculated scumbags.

Wouldn't that be nice though? "Well officer, we came around the corner and saw that man over there - the one in the bloody crumpled and badly-folded heap - assaulting this chap. As you can see, we used minimum force, but he was most vicious and regrettably it was entirely necessary to beat the living shite out of him and his friends".
"On your way Sirs, and thank you for your public spiritedness"
"Not at all officer".
"Gaw bless you all and your not in the slightest bit vigilante based singlespeeds, Sirs"

Critical mass beating
I've given it a lot of thought
Police can't do anything since there's no cctv and they're wearing balaclavas

I got a brand new Cannondale in March. Got hit from behind by a motorbike in July and had the back end pretty much re built.
It got stolen on Tuesday from my garden- 4 thieves caught on cctv, through 2 electric gates, cut the flexilink with bolt croppers (it was attached to a metal post) and rode off. 3:20am.
I'd not liked the bike since the accident and was considering a single speed so maybe they have done me a favour.

That's awful. Might not do much to help people who are already cycling through there late at night, but could they not put up a few visible yellow signs like they do for other crimes? Generally to make people aware of what's going on. Fifteen similar incidents?! Did they sound like they were taking it seriously?

Christ... Thanks for the heads up and hope it hasn't left you too traumatised, Synthetics.
Have forwarded your message to friends who also ride and live nearby.
The idea of smacking the living shit out of these scumbags is incredibly appealing. -

The reaction of the police is absolute crap. According to the bike blog, these kinds of attacks have been happening for well over a year now in exactly the same spot. How can the police not be doing anything about this? If it were muggings of old ladies or carjackings of BMWs they'd be pulling out all the stops to catch those scrotes. Infuriating.

18 August 2009 3:30PM Not De Beauvoir Square by any chance? Luckily me bike was crap so they decided just to nick the bag from my basket instead... i know at least 3 other people had the same problem at exactly the same spot withing the next month, one being pulled to the ground while at speed.

You're very warm with De Beauvoir Square - it was actually just a few yards to the west of it - before a tree-covered pedestrian entrance where De Beauvoir Rd crosses Northchurch Rd/Terrace. I'd used this route many times before, but never since. Sounds like the gang, or others with the same idea are at it again. No CTV there still?

The local Safer Neighbourhoods team should be all over this like flies on shit. No excuses.

Yeah, that's EXACTLY the spot. I wonder what it will take for the police to actually take some kind of action... ? So there's been regular attacks happening in the SAME PLACE for a year now - doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to work something out.

I wonder if the IPCC would be useful? They're not normally known for their helpfulness, but it might be worth a try.
http://www.ipcc.gov.uk/index/complaints/your_complaint_.htm
"Act in a manner that does not discredit or undermine public confidence in the police service" <- could perhaps form the nub of the complaint, refusing to do anything about a known troublespot for over a year is not really encouraging public confidence in the service

this country is disgusting ! i hear there is a white vw going round islington area collecting bikes as the young boys remove them from the rails etc . i saw yesterday two hoodies eyeing up the bikes as i locked mine up , they just walk around all day find the target , call up the van and do the job !
but the violence is really not necessary , ruining peoples lives , the same people who pay for their education, jail, dole , housing ..............oh god pass me the daily mail !
