  • the papers will always be dull.

    (even with a backlight)

  • Would be interested to know how this turns out. I'm tempted as all hell to get a Kindle because I ship myself between London and San Francisco a lot and most of my handluggage room/weight is taken up by books. A little reader with a tonne of books on would be perfect.

    That Nook looks lovely.

  • i am a big admirer of their eggs

  • I was wondering who buro9 was on me twitter.

My opinion on something like this, is to go for it. Since you're researching a lot, I would imagine that it would make it entirely convenient, especially if you are travelling, because of the obvious reason of 'lugging around stacks of books'.

Having an index feature where you can just quickly search, would deam fantastic.

What you've said about .pdf's being treated as Images? I remember being able to highlight text within a .pdf? Or did you just mean about it being scaled.
I wonder if you can hilight stuff and make notes... Some kind of feature like that? Though, I don't think this is touch screen?

    Anyway, go get it.
    Give us your review =)

I do like the look of that Nook though.

  • 'Tis me.

  • Hm, I like paper books (and have far too many of them), but I wonder what I would have done while studying. I had folders and crates full of photocopied articles that didn't actually interest me a great deal and that I didn't want to keep. I might well have been tempted by one of these things, but one main reason why I don't enjoy having a huge amount of data in a computer is because I can't see how much it is. I find it a lot easier to get through stacks of stuff if I have it sitting right next to me in a physical manifestation. In data format it seems too remote and I don't enjoy that.

  • If it makes you feel better use lego. Every time you load something up, add a bit of lego to a tower. Every time you read something, take a piece off.

  • Haha, nice idea.

  • nice one leader! tried to kick this discussion off months ago, still havent got one am waiting until the best people have bought enough for the price to come down.

since posting that there are two more times I have discovered having one would be perfect,
in the cinema reading whilst all the garbage ads are on, and you are in there keeping warm
in the bath, in a waterproof zip bag.......
must be loads more reasons to get one.

  • I think the format wars are stopping people to some extent. From what I understand this is still not universal. Mind you I don't know how easy they are to hack.

  • eh?isnt it back lit.............that was why I ,er , suggested it

  • Looks like you can get to a console so all manor of possibilities in the end

and some guy has hacked it to make it open to other file formats as well

  • notice I didnt suggest that option ;) well spotted though.

  • Thinking of grabbing one of the new kindles. Can anyone tell me if the updated PDF support is good? And note taking/highlighting (in PDFs)? This is all I care about.

  • Kindles are brilliant, saw one in the flesh the other week. Might be cheaper to group buy perhaps ?

  • My friend has a Kindle and it displays pdfs well. The larger screen will help.
The only problem I have with e-ink is that annoying refreshing it does when you change the page, although I think the newer models do so more discretely...

  • where can I look at one? Never seen one but would love to have a try

  • I've asked for one for xmas, so I can get rid of a load of books and fit more bikes in.

I've been using the Kindle app for my Android phone recently, and although the screen is small it's actually quite good. Have been loving Treasure Island recently.
Also, there is a project to get every non copywright book in Kindle/Ipad etc format for free.

(brace yourselves for the pending forum book sale)

  • Yes that Kindle Android app is good. Good to snatch a few pages whilst on the porcelain throne......particularly on work time ;)

I see what you did there.. the eggs of numbing inevitability..sometimes I eat the toy our of sheer despair

My bump has not returned any real answers yet. Trying again.

  • I'm also interested in the pdf support as I have many pdf files that I would want to read should I buy one.
Do you still have to email them your files to get them converted or does it read them directly.
