9,653.
My supervisor asked me to get it down between 9,000 and 10,000.
My goal is 8,000.
One of my "space wasters" is to quote something, and immediately follow it with "Again:" and then explain what the quote has just said. This is necessary and useful at time, but ultimately, if I am just going to re-write/re-state the quote, there is no need to have the quote.
But some quotes are just so rad.
Like this one:
The [militia] regiment of Saint-Gervais had done its exercises, and, according to the custom, they had supped by companies; most of those who formed them gathered after supper in the St. Gervais square and started dancing all together, officers and soldiers, around the fountain, to the basin of which the drummers, the fifers, and the torch bearers had mounted... [T]he harmony of five or six hundred men in uniform, holding one another by the hand and forming a long ribbon which wound around, serpent-like, in cadence and without confusion, with countless turns and returns, countless sorts of figured evolutions, the excellence of the tunes which animated them, the sound of the drums, the glare of the torches, a certain military pomp in the midst of pleasure, all this created a very lively sensation that could not be experienced coldly... Soon the windows were full of female spectators who gave a new zeal to the actors; they could not long confine themselves to their windows and they came down; the wives came to their husbands, the servants brought wine; even the children, awakened by the noise, ran half-clothed amidst their fathers and mothers. The dance was suspended; now there were only embraces, laughs, healths, and caresses. There resulted from this a general emotion that I could not describe but which, in universal gaiety, is quite naturally felt in the midst of all that is dear to us. My father, embracing me, was seized with trembling which I think I still feel and share. “Jean-Jacques,” he said to me, “love your country. Do you see these good Genevans? They are all friends, they are all brothers; joy and concord reign in their midst. You are a Genevan; one day you will see other peoples; but even if you should travel as much as your father, you will not see their likes.”

Horatio - you can just put all the quotes in the appendix.

• #2607
9,257 - if anyone's counting.
And fuck appendices. I might as well make some pie charts while I'm at ;)

Sorry if this is Grandmother/Eggs... but I helped a mate with their dissertation this summer which had to go from 14,000 to 5,000.... a careful reading of the small print showed that all Appendix's, before the introduction, and graphic sub-titles were out of the word count.... Shifing stuff into the Appendix moved 8,000 words.... :-)

Brand new SRAM Rival brake and gear cable set — just double-checking, these are donuts that thread onto the exposed part of the rear brake cable that runs along the side of the top tube right?
Should I get some of these? What's the benefit?

Stops the cables rubbing on your frame.

• #2614
I'm thinking about taking them off, having cabled up the bike at the weekend they really drag/scud along the frame during braking, which is a bit self-defeating since without them the cable doesn't touch the frame anyway...

Ah, didn't know if it was for alignment or something. It's for my polo bike so prob no point then.
Cheers y'all.

Fucking pendents. I'm not going to walk along a street yelling buy my sign.
Where as in a good outlet, dealer, website. I'm just not sure if ebay is the best idea or if there is a better route to go.

How hard is it to get a job with Sustrans?
-
• #2618
Ask someone who works for them... PM *M.F, he's a Sustrans Bike It officer by trade. There is also a thread somewhere where jobs in cycling were being advertised, had some sustrans stuff in (but I can't find it).

ftfy.
They don't "rub", since they are under too much tension, but they can vibrate over bumpy surfaces and rattle a bit.
