i'll whip it in to brixton as i'm not local to brockley taki.
DJ: don't think it's the pedals, as they've been on and off and back on again during this. i'm a spaz but i'm a spaz at stripping threads/bolt heads not crossing threads. yet. -

The presta valve stems don't have any retaining nuts, maybe this is the problem as the valves can rattle against the rim.
Cheers kam, I'll go through that :)

Are all your spokes tight? If one is loose it will rattle about.
Just grab pairs of spokes going around the wheel and you will find out.

no probs Tom - if it's the missing tube retaining nut you can usually hear it by lifting the wheel off the ground and dropping it, at least in the case of my lady's bike.

I'm not sure whether its the front end now, as when I bend down to listen it seems like it might actually be coming from the back. Bouncing it around doesn't seem to make it click. Checked everything and nothing is loose. Happens whether I'm pedalling or not. The speed of the click doesn't seem to change with the speed of the bike. Doesn't seem to make this noise when there's no weight on the bike. So annoying!

Release and then tighten up your saddle clamp and seat post.

this is odd - its bugging me too now. i'd like to look at the bike.

check front wheel bearings arn't too tight possibly?
-
• #787
Over-tightened headset = my 2 penneth. Check by standing your bike level and straight, and simply turn your handlebar left 90 degrees,
then right 90 degrees. Turn at different speeds, from slow to medium to quicker. If you hear squeaking, then you've found the answer.Or, if could be the hub is over-tightened also, as mentioned above.

OK I think it's in the rear wheel now - turns out I can actually hear it without any weight on the bike! I turned it on its back and span the wheel fast and the sound reappeared. Sounds like it may be coming from the rim so maybe there's something in there. All the spokes seem to be tight so I don't think it's a loose nipple.
Not the freewheel as I put it on the fixed side and it still did it. As an aside, how do you guys ride fixed in towns?! It's great when you're at a steady speed on the open road but for moving slow as you would through traffic etc it just feels so awkward.

try it with a lower ratio

Oh, oh, oh! Finally located the constant metallic dink vibration I get on anything but baby smooth roads. I must be thick as shit, or at least as thick as the two bike shop squeak finders who were just as flummoxed. But now your ass is mine, you dirty filthy loose rear drive side spacer! Mine!
Threaded nut on the hub axle inside of the dropout had moved slightly outward (120mm hubs in 130mm spacing) allowing spacer to rattle like a bastard. Well no more AND my wheel is now central, which is nice. -

im in the market for an ace knock-finder - having similar probs to damo a few posts up, no joy with my admittedly limited mechanical expertise.
will pay top dollah!

Hey all,
I picked up a new Pompino recently and chose their track crank that uses the external bearing BB. Having ridden it for a week I've now got a metal creak coming from the BB area when I apply pressure to the pedals. It's that double ping noise of metal flexing as it is stressed and unstressed.
I've tried tightening everything up and the noise is still there. Anyone had any experience with this crank/BB set? Any suggestions of what to look at?
Thanks.

Hello all, have an intermitent creaking/tick coming from what 'sounds' like the drive crank. The sound only comes when i'm accelerating so was wondering if this noise is actually coming from the chain when it's under the maximum stress? I'm riding a focale 44 relax, drive train is stock. ta muchly for any help...

i 'm pretty sure sometimes even when everything's nice and tight ,small movements you can't actually see or feel - - metal against metal - makes a creak becoming annoying or making it seem something's wrong.
- grease the joins - for eg. chain wheel to spider and around crank bolts
or crank on spline is a classic (keep those BB bolts tight though) - sometimes just rotation of cranks on BB spline 90/180/270 degrees is enough to stop clicking - there's 4 positions they can go on a square spline BB
if you prefer a loctite can used on anything you think that grease is inappropriate
- grease the joins - for eg. chain wheel to spider and around crank bolts

check your pedals - unscrew em, give them the full 'last tango in paris' treatment, screw em back in nice and tight and see if makes a diference. worked for me. oh and check your chainring bolts. cheeky fuckers are always coming loose.

Bump
Tip for those, like me, who have been experiencing loud crunchy chain noise when pushing hard: Check sprocket wear. It was so worn the chain was having a real hard time meshing and then leaving the sprocket...

For the record, I got a new link on the chain, but the problem just got progressively worse. It also became apparent that the problem was the sprocket. It became worn in such a way that each tooth became slightly hooked, so the chain wouldn't slip off - it would get stuck, then jump off.
Just though I'd update this thread for other n00bs who have similar problems.
The sprocket was a BLB 16T. Probably wore down most when I ran it with an un-lubed chain for a day or two.

Depending on the sprocket and whether or not it's dished, you might be able to flip it around and use it for a little while longer
Do you have a timepiece on your ear?
