I've said it before and I'll say it again, riding freewheel one-brake is no more or less stupid than riding fixed gear no brakes. And no-one gets their panties in a bunch over the brakeless crew.
I'm not saying it's the smartest decision in the world - it's much better to have two ways of stopping than only one - but the chances of your brake failing are minimal, and the hissy fits being thrown here are more to do with cultural conditioning than a serious appreciation for the risk.

Dont you think though it may also be that those with no braks and fixed are probably more experienced at this and more subborn and know it all than the potential for us to save a life with a free wheel and 1 brake who may simply be ignorant?
But i do agree with you that this is social conditioning. Its well known that this group has a high number of riders with very high seat posts, deap section rims, Sidis, Lopro/'classic' frames, cycling caps.
