Alice follows Tati because she believes the magic is real (a bit like an overly obsessed fan). Who knows if she was missed back in Mull, maybe she was, but the film isn't about that bit of the story.
I think their relationship is presumed by others to be father/daughter like, that's why its not questioned. The book at the end is to show the audience that although Tati said magicians don't exist, magical type things can still happen.
Good question about the photo at the end, he looks at that photo several times at the start of the film too. Its supposed to be is daughter that he misses. (hence the relationship he strikes up with Alice - he misses his real daughter.) He leaves suddenly at the end because everyone else around him is also moving on, especially Alice with her new boyfriend. Its not said but its possibly because he wants to see his real daughter.
