  • Crazy people, not too bothered about keeping their bikes obviously

Not neccesarily. If there is little theft then they might not need to lock it to keep their bike? just because London is fucked up when it comes to bike theft doesn't mean the rest of the world should have to act the same

  • When i was in Florence last year i saw lots of bike porn left with the bare minumum of security, this Alan being one example

I was amazed at Palermo for that. Bloke pulls up on brand new Honda Transalp, leaves engine running, goes into bakery to pick up nommy biscuitgoods, stops for a chat for a while. This in supposedly lawless Sicily. After that, I noticed that no one seems to lock anything there.

I <3 Sicily. (And Florence too, now you mention it - used to go there once or twice a year throughout my childhood).

Maybe he was mafia so everyone knew not to steal his bike?

  • Only if absolutely everyone else with a bike/scooter/car/motorbike in Palermo is too.

  • saw this outside the bike jumble in steyning..lucky it was steyning and not anywhere else!

Is the blue thing with the combination lock that appears to be attached to a twig part of this fiendishly clever security?

  • Oops

  • funny fucker

  • What's with cutting a chunk out the rear rim? The whole wheels looks swipeable if that's a word.

Its what happens when someone wishes to take a bike that is locked with the Sheldon Brown method.

That is a joke photo, but its how the Sheldon method is actually overcome. Cut the rear wheel itself, with a boltcutter, and that releases the bike. If the bike was valuable, only a new rear wheel is needed and that would be it.

I'm imagining that someone cut that bike free from Sheldon locking, then threw it over a very tall post. Hence the joke photo.

Is it not one of those alarm locks, maybe the owner was close by?

  • Loving the leather strap security. It's a bit like at a festival when you zip up your tent. It's all about zipping the tent down, then zip it up a bit then forcefully zip it down again. It's that last zip down that puts people off.

  • Aviva fails to peddle bike insurance with bungled PR stunt:

    Bike Thief Nabbed...almost:

"He was convinced he had locked the frame of his £350 bike to the stand with the D lock, but he has just retrieved his bike from the cop shop ‘minus one spoke’ – so silly fellow had locked his wheel with the D lock. A lesson to us all. Best to lock both cable and D lock through the frame."

  • Win!

    Fixed?....

    ..

That's one of the worst PR stunts ever, although maybe it was to point out that Aviva are now offering insurance on unlocked bikes?

  • has anyone else noticed that more people are locking up properly or is it just where i go? one downside is that it makes it a huge pain to fit in a mini evo or fahg because you can't really move the other bike over for more space.

  • I've spotted more badly locked bikes recently, I've developed writers cramp leaving polite notes of advice. I got quite a few new pics to upload when I'm not on my phone!

  • Dorset style Cycle Stands:

  • you can attach and remove your d locks by just pulling the metal legs out of the ground
saves having to bring your keys

  • Thinnest cable possible + luggage padlock = fail.

  • Thinnest cable possible + luggage padlock = fail.

That's what I use for club runs (Cornwall/Devon) at cafe stops, most everyone else leaves theirs unlocked.

  • Well it's acceptable in those circumstances, but not on a side street off Picadilly.

Do you really write little notes for people?
Pictures of them as well please.

  • hey, i leave notes from time to time. some people just don't know that steel cables are only slightly more effective than string.
