  • Now that my Ellipse wheels are going to be living out their days spared from the vagaries of the English weather, they're being refurbished with these SKF E2 low friction bearings. In the "accumulation of small gains" game, these could be worth 0.01s in a flying 200 over the standard no-brand 6001-2RS bearings, or about 15cm. Most of that is down to using non-contact shields rather than rubber seals. There's potentially a couple of seconds in a 25 mile TT to be had from using these in my HED3 too.

    Ill try dig up an article a mechanical engineer did on "time saving" techniques in cycling, it varied from skin suits to bearings and everything in between for you mdcc.

    Also if your looking for new bearings try find some industrial all ceramic ones, SiO2 or an equivalent.

  • I was taking the piss, I don't need 1/100th of a second in a match sprint since I only ride them for fun during training sessions. I'm aware of most of the time saving methods since I've been time trialling for over 30 years now. Don't fancy full ceramics in wheel bearings, due to the shock loading, and also because the time gains are poor value for money even when you buy from an industrial bearing factor, rather than paying the 500% sucker tax that bike manufacturers add. I've got ceramic hybrid bearings in my dérailleur pulleys on my best geared bike though, since that looks like an ideal place for them. SiO2 is sand/quartz/glass, not a bearing ceramic suited to bicycle use. Silicon Nitride is the most common ceramic bearing, although Zirconium Oxide has some fans in other sports such as roller blading.

  • Could anybody recommend a 1" threadless carbon road fork for me?

    Will be used for courier work so strength is crucial.

    Budget is irrelevant but best value for money appreciated.

  • It's an option but I imagine they aren't the easiest to get hold of. Also one of the more expensive options and heard of the glue failing a lot. Could be proved wrong though.

  • Max, if you can wait a week the fork off my Merckx will be for sale. Its nothing special, but is lightly used/never crashed.

  • Not much 1" product around these days, you're most likely to find something NOS rather than current production. A couple of high end forks are still made in 1" to go with narrow head tubes on TT/Tri/Track frames, but the mainstream/mid-low end market is all about 1.1/8, as you'll already have noticed. This steel fork is only £40 and would seem like a better option for a work bike.

  • Both! And I mean light compared to 80's Tange steel, not weight weenie light.

  • I wouldn't get on any step of the fork ladder between the cheap steel one and an EC90
