  • Returning to the forum but sadly not yet the road is the 1963 Superlight, sorry not entirely new to forumers. Yes this is the one Sumo offered here two months ago...Hope to finish before the weather turns. Thought there might be some interest in its whereabouts.

  • Seriously, the frame is made for 27" wheel, which mean there's shitload of space for 700c with huge tyres.

And yes, they're CXP14, my favourite deep section rims of all, got the gentlest curve and reasonably light for a deep section alu rims.

Really can't wait to ride fixed again.

The question is should you be using a 38c on a CXP14 rim, how will the rim handle it?

  • The fatter the tyres the lower the psi.

I used to have 32c tyres running at a modest 65psi.

Hell, with 47c tyres, I ran it at 15psi.

Take your point on rims though, those rims usually have a max width of says, 28c (or 32c), but they're manufacturer recommendation, and they tend to err on the side of caution.

  • With a bit of luck i might get time to start putting this together this weekend..

If you run 38s on skinny road racing rims, you either have to pump them up so hard you almost negate the comfort gain, or you leave them soft and suffer dreadful handling and a real possibility of rolling the tyre off the rim any time you put a substantial side load on them. Even the apparently small step up to a 23mm wide rim makes a worthwhile difference to the usability of big tyres. For 38s, I'd got for a 30-32mm rim as an ideal.

nice! but can't see the BB?

  • Just put 32c tyres on, look like there's plenty of space left;

Look like 38c is a possiblities, it got more clearance than the old Holdsworth.

truth. I was running 38s on a DV (polo bike) for a while. Terrifying.

  • I still want to see how much room I have left with 38c though.

32c is a sensible limit, road on that for a while, felt pretty good.

Don't forget that a tyre will be wider when it's on a wider rim, so don't assume that you can get a 38 in there on a proper rim just because it goes in when fitted to a too-narrow one.

  • Got touring rims for that.

  • Some of you will have seen my current project at LMNH, still needs a bit of work (new tyres, handlebar tape) but pretty darn chuffed with it.
    Sorry about the photo...

  • Jackson, that's fuckin awesome, right down to the TA crankset.

  • It would suck without a TA crankset. Luckily you were smart enough to clock that one. Could have got embarrassing in here if you didn't.

  • Cheers Ed, yeah, its a bike that gets compliments aright even though I've only taken it out once.

    phew!!

  • Less awesome, but finished for now.

Darn its a Stronglight, I must suck after all ;)

  • I like it apart from the ratio, 50 odd gear inches aint my bag.

  • phew!!

    haha

    Both really nice.

  • Polo bike I put together from stuff in the garage. Nice big, bouncy tires. BB and crankset are knackered and the frame might fall in two if I have a hard shunt. Will put a new BB and crankset with smaller ring (currently 48:18) and it should be good for a laugh. Cranks are cottered though - never worked on those.

A world of fun is about to open up to you.

  • A world of pain, swearing, smashed thumbs, crying, shame and self loathing is about to open up to you.
