1. Of course you need to import them into Google. What's it going to do, magically read contacts off your phone? Just import into phone and then Google Sync/HTC Sync will do the rest.
      Once they're in Google, no more losing phone = losing all contacts. Contacts are synced between phone and gmail so effectively available anywhere in the world with a phone signal. You can also back them up to your SD card and other stuff.
