I don't get all this 'functional' bike stuff, they all have racks and mud guards on. That type of bicycle wouldn't be very functional if I wanted to take it on the track or offroad would it. A road bike or a DH bike can be just as functional (if used for its intended purpose).

Methinks you're reading too much into 'functional', but yes I do somewhat agree, I suppose it's more akin to calling a Specialized Langster a 'track' bicycle simply because it got track end and the like.

maybe whoever on here first started calling them functional did so because they are possibly the bikes best suited for riding around London, so are functional for what most of us do.

I think the word should be practical rather than functional as all bikes serve a function but not all are practical for general use.
So practical = general utility bike = boring old man rubbish

practical's defintely a better choice of word than functional.
