Yet again more generalisation.
I'm listening 31T, I'm just waiting for a good reason.

Pins + Waffle sole = plenty of grips.
You can bunny hop a bmx without "retention". Unless you ride with locked-up ankles you get plenty of grip around enough of the stroke to slow down.
I rode this year's Clunker on my polo bike with DMR V8s, a sub 40" fixed gear and one front canti brake. I didn't fall off and I finished somewhere between 10th and 15th.
Stop arsing around and start talking about lockrings, ffs.

Scared of straps.

Used double straps on the trackbike. They're a bit meh for anything longer than a keirin.

I have to say when I first built a fixed bike I tried riding with some meaty bear traps for a few days - was nervous about being connected to pedals that were flying around relentlessly. down hills were really a challenge at this point...
Boy was I wronggg!!! as soon as I tried it with my spds it opened up a whole new way of riding. If you've ever snow boarded this is what I compare it to. you can throw your bike around, skip it to check your speed.... you feel connected, i mean. You're missing out, really. i know you can't ride like that without retention. the fact that scoble offered to send you clip & strap as well.... why not give it a try, and then see what you've been missing?
it's not going to cost you anyhing, and you don't even have to admit that you like it, when you inevitably do.

It's because I know what it's like to be strapped in. I'm not bothered by it. I'm not a noob. I've raced for more than half my life using clips & straps pretty much from the start.
For perfect efficiency being clipped in is the way forward but I'm not after that.

Had a nasty experience today when I managed to strip the thread on my lockring skidding downhill...I'd never had any issue doing this before and I panicked when I thought I'd f*cked my hub!
Fortunately I got it checked out by my LBS and they supplied me with a new one...
I'd rather not have this happen again so was wondering if it my inadequate assembly (I use a chainwhip and lockring tool) or should I invest the extra couple of quid in a DA or similar one?
What lockrings do you recommend?
Cheers

Your cog must have been loose. You need to get bigger arms.

DA lockring solved my slipping problem, definitely worth the extra few quid, been running it for a year or so and no slipping.
Simply because it's safer that way, also you'll gain a lots more control of your vessel with foot retention.
