I was looking to move flats last year (renting).
Found a nice one advertised privately, but despite it being perfect in every other way it was just a bit too expensive.
Found the same one advertised by Foxtons a few weeks later for a bit less, as it clearly hadn't been let at the advertised price.
Got Foxtons to give us a lift round and had another look. Told them it was too expensive, but thanks.
Then phoned the landlord (we still had his number from the original private ad) and suggested we make a deal between ourselves as we would then both save on Foxtons fees. He sounded quite surprised, as if the thought hadn't crossed his mind. With a little negotiation we got the flat, for a mutually agreeable price.
