with knee high grey socks?

a friend was saying how great spandals and knee high sealskinz are for winter
stops you having shoes that fill up with water
but the sartorial error probably does not make it worthwhile

ahh... there we go with the old sartorial considerations again. How very London! In the Yorkshire Dales we dont give a fuck what it looks like as long as it works.
Actually its one of the joys of my double-life. functional rufty-tufty bikes up north, and cool poncy bikes in London!
I might be off to Portland in new year, permanently, so i'll have to up my game sartorially! -

This thread is like the drunken family argument around the Christmas dinner table about politics.
We should all shut up, but everybody wants to have the last word.
DK is concerned that the forum is not such a nice place any more.
Maybe we should just kill this thread? Lock it or whatever. Threads like this really aren't helping.

Hahaha! Anti-Brakeless Lobby Forum Gold Award Winner 2010. Proving yourself wrong...
I had a front brake on that bike!!! I ploughed into DJ because I was looking over my shoulder and he stopped quickly in front of me - It was my lack of awareness, not brakes that caused that prang...

As a newbie, i think it's great that
1) the forum is so busy
2) you can argue and call people what you like
3) no heavy handed moderationIf you dont like a thread just ignore it, but at least people can say what they want - it's awesome!

So with your observation skills you could not stop with 2 brakes. So only having a fixed drivetrain is clearly safer for you?
I can see the validity of your argument
:-)
Not an asshole

my tuppence worth sparky, this article is just further proof, that riding fixed has jumped the shark,
had to google jumped the shark...my god that is funny and just odd!!!

Yes of course, thank you so much for making me realise that an illegal and inefficient method of braking is in fact "fine".
I will go on an immediate crusade to inform all those other misguided people and organisations involved in cycling that we have a new messiah called Chris Borneo and it's actually OK to recommend and sell illegal and unsafe bikes.
I think those of us who know two brakes are better than one are clearly evangelising arseholes.
We are possibly upsetting the fuckwits so we should all be banned.
I'm not trying to argue about efficiency, I'm not trying to argue about legality and I'm not trying to argue that one brake is better than two, I'm just saying that I think one brake is sufficient to stop the bike safely in the conditions in which it is ridden.
The safety of any bike or cylist is subjective.
Some people would concider it unsafe to ride without high vis, pedal and spoke reflectors, handlebar mounted mirrors, a bell etc
I think the most important thing about not having adequate brakes on your bike; is, if you are involved in accident, on the road, that is caused by the negligent actions of another road user and you are injured/killed, then their blame can be massively negated by the fact your bike was not suitable for road use and that it may have been a factor in your aforementioned injury/death and even if it wasn't in any way your fault, the perpetrator maybe given an easy ride in the judicial system.
The same applies for if you are drunk and in charge of a bicycle...
This is a very good point and for this reason I may have to reconcider fitting a rear brake.

What?! The fact you may not get paid out is more important than ensuring your girlfriends safety whilst riding a bike you built for her?
Truly fucking special, you are.
-
• #1619
I cracked 2 ribs coming off a SS bike with just a front brake while I waited for my rear fixed wheel to arrive. I was riding very safely but it is so easy to skid out on a steep incline even in the dry.
It is stupid and dangerous, why put your girlfriend in such unnecessary danger? -

.its really not.
Especially in this case. -

I'm thinking about a situation where she might get hit by someone through no fault of her own and then miss out on the compensation she would need.
I'm still confident the bike is safe for her to ride with one brake and I'm yet to hear from anyone of a situation where this would not be the case.
it is so easy to skid out on a steep incline even in the dry.
Really?
Anyway I probably should have mentioned earlier that we live in Southsea and there are no hills. Not even one.

• #1622
its really not.
Especially in this case.Maybe I used the wrong word. I'm not sure but like I said, some people would concider a bike unsafe without reflectors, mirrors etc and I think but I'm not sure that the law requires one at least on the back. Do you see the point I'm trying to make?
-
• #1623
you don't actually understand it, do you?
-
• #1624
As I said, when deciding to fit a rear brake you're putting money in front of the safety of someone you supposedly care about. Which makes you truly fucking special as mentioned above.

• #1625
only valid if you stick it in the front
