I would be interested but I don't even think I could class myself as a beginner yet, only played twice down in camberwell. I'm based east though and I want to play a lot of polo over the next 6 months.
Where do beginnner types play at the weekend?
Well, the only beginner session is on tuesdays, though I have been considering starting an easts beginner session on another day, such as thursday.
Weekends are usually at Downham, with the big boys...
Anyway, regarding the league, next time all three of us are at beginners, lets hope pot luck, or some creative shuffling ;) , gets us into a team together...

John, the regulars have a Thursday session at Downham too.
I was thinking once my break is repaired, I'll probably organise a Monday session or two at Newington for beginners, because I work late on Tuesdays so making Quorn is difficult, and the lights are on at Newington, so it means people can play until much later. I can bring two mallets with me. People say to me I'm not a beginner any more but I still feel like I am, and I'd prefer to start off again at a beginner session, just to ease myself into it.

we have discussed before not over loading newt with nights kevin. wanting to keep the locals sweet etc ...

Only one night a week at the moment though, no? Thats hardly excessive.

I'm aware of that, I didn't mention Downham anywhere... (when I've previously mentioned this the plan has been Brick Lane or Broadway)

Same with Quorn Road a bit too, but it's not as established as the discussions had at Newt with the residents.
Sometimes the kids to play on the court and my team went down to practice on a Monday and they pretty much ignored us. IF they're there on a Tuesday, then they get off at 7pm or when there's a few people turned up. We haven't had a conversation about this but I guess it's just a respect thing. These beginners sessions are funny because one week it can be very beginners but a lot of the time it's more 'intermediate'.
I had thought of doing a slightly more advanced session on a Thursday but I don't think there's enough call for it yet. This might be something it progresses in to, which would be nice. -

Ah ok, apologies.
I dont know either of them courts, apart from people mentioning them from 'back in the day'.

No worries.
Neither are great, but will do for beginners.

I think it would be great to have a beginners session more central, but it's finding a court and day that suits.
The problem from my perspective is that it would obviously detract from Quorn Rd. sessions, which is fine apart from the loaner bike situation.
I''m happy to ghost it from mine to QR, but I wouldn't be able to get it much further than that.
I don't think giving the loaner to a noob suits either for a few reasons so I'm not sure how it would work.
I guess if it were to happen then we'd iron all these things out.
More beginners is great though. -

That's my worry, I'd rather have one session, than two badly attended sessions.

More chances to practice and levels to adjust/fit in.

kev we have team / league games occasionally on a tuesday, weds souths, thurs sometimes but not often and the odd weekend all dayer. The things is weds is the only 'official' day and other ones crop up from time to time as written above. If you start a thread for tuesdays and make it an official beginners night then that does affect all our nights because the residents dont really care that we do it occasionally all they will see is bike polo there everyday of the week. I'm just cautioning as it is something we have discussed before.

OK, didnt realise there were more games than just the Wednesday.
Have the residents there made a complaint about polo in the past?

I'd definitely be down for an easts beginner session.

Why do we need to be so much more careful with newington residents than they seem to be at mitch or downham?
-
• #468
Because they sabotage the light because they don't want us there?
Someone spent some time chatting to a resident at Newt and got them on side a bit, which is obv a good thing. -
• #469
yes there was a bit of complaint, admittedly she was a nobhed but still. I don't think we need to be more careful than NE loui but its the court i play at and its the one that affects me which is why i mention it. The NE guys have had there own problems and they deal with them and the kids in their own way. I dont have an opinion on there because i've never experienced it.

Cool, well, I'll speak to everyone at the next beginner session on tuesday, and then maybe next thursday we'll go to Brick lane/Broadway courts.

?
We've had this discussion at the start of the thread. But to reiterate:
Obviously the more polo being played the better.
My concerns are that there are not enough people to have more than 1 session at the moment. If this gets saturated I believe it will be to the detriment of all sessions. Believe me I've spent a lot of time and effort trying to get this thing running.
I haven't advertised this outside of the forum as I believe it wouldn't encourage too many long term, committed players, which is essentially what it's all about. If people want to go more central, or more local than that's fine, but I'm not ghosting a loaner bike around town.
I think that QR sessions are good for beginners as it attracts some people who have been playing for a while, and some from the league. This will obviously serve to help advance any beginners and indeed a few more 'intermediate' level players.
From my perspective, this has only just come in to fruition, so I would ask people to consider carefully the ramifications of any other sessions set up.
Beginners polo isn't established enough yet and I would hate to see the hard work go to waste.I'm not being precious, I just think this needs some consideration.

And I agree, but there is only one way to find that out. If it does affect attendance on tuesdays then I wouldn't want it to continue.

Do what you've got to do John.
I would advise trying to get some established players to go so you can learn quicker. To my mind I would say it's fairly obvious this would have a detrimental effect on these sessions. We've already established that there aren't enough beginners for more than one session.

Have we? When I've been the last few times there have been 15ish people...
Anyway, I don't want to step on anyone's toes here, I just want to play more polo, with souths on wednesday, and downham at the weekend, I rather have a slightly lower level session than go to NE on thursday too...
