What happens when the brake cable snaps

I keep the bike regularly maintained so it's not a problem.

Stop arguing the toss over something you either know nothing about, are are unwilling to admit you are wrong about.

Disk brakes will give better braking performance than most other types of brakes but it doesn't mean we all need them.
Braking performance is irrelevant after a certain point, if you can lock your wheels then no other kind of brake will slow you down quicker. It's the tyres that then become the limiting factor in your braking.

An interesting point for shop owners asnd managers, is that the shop takes legal liability for any bike leaving the shop for the road (into the car/van to go to the track is ok). We quickly learned that we could not allow an illegal bike out of our place or we would be liable if the rider was prosecuted or involved in a crash. This applies to any shop, even if you are only mending a puncture. The last mechanic to touch the bike owns its safety and legality.
For that reason (and cos we thought they were dicks) we refused to let our local 'brakeless' fraternity through the door with their bikes. -

Jesus why does this thread even exist? Just have two fucking brakes, if you honestly think you look cooler because you only have one brake, you're an absolute tool.

I think you'll find this is precisely the problem.

Why should I stop. I feel I'm making valid points. Maybe it's you that's unwilling to admit you're wrong.
Is there a thread somewhere else on front brakes on single speeds? We've totally wrecked poor Jennys thread.
Sorry Jenny

To be fair she started it because she wanted views on a bike in an auction, she didn't win, so now it's pretty irrelevant.
Though I did want the SA hub of it...

additionally you make no reference to the utter fuckwits who run single speed with one brakey
My FG created a flutter of interest when I arrived at my new job where no one had one, so much so one lad went straight out and bought a Fugi Track. He came back from the shop with a ss and only a front break. It's ridiculous and totally irresponsible for a shop to do this (Evans, Manchester) and he didn't seem to comprehend what I was I was saying when I said he either needed a rear brake or to go fixed.
I gave him a back brake and even offered to fit it but all he's done is glue a picture of a bloke on it with bottom jaw on one part and top of head on other so that he can hilariously make it look like he's talking in the office........I give up.

@sparky
didnt realise it was you. have commented on the article.@mobidog
want to put your threatened ego to the test? tell me your commute and bike, and lets see how you stop copmpared to my MAFAC Racers, shall we? (That was a joke BTW, on the fact of the 'brakeless' debate being so driven by threatened egos),I can't see how it's anything to do with ego, I ride within my limits which I am fully aware of. Ergo, when riding without a caliper brake I ride slowly and carefully, anticipating the actions of all other road users, seen and unseen. I have several bikes and go much faster on my road bike than I do on my 'brakeless' fixed wheel. I have a F. Moser track bike with no drilling for a front brake, among others, if you have to ask. I ride brakeless because I enjoy the state of awareness I enter into, it's almost Zen like, man - I'm like one with the road, the universe, the double rainbow FFS

@hippy
this is not the first time you have thrown unprovoked abuse at me on this forum. unlike you, I merely read the threads which interest me. I remember you read one of my adverts, in which you were not interested, then went and counted the total number of my advert threads, to tell me i was selling shit. When my item sold quickly to a happy bidder, you told me to get fucked.
You must be a very pleasant person to know, or a deeply troubled one.
I have never met you, or challenged you, or insulted you, so please refrain from abusing me in future. -

s'ol Mobidog,
I picked on you cos yours was one of the more sensible and rational comments. sadly, a more provocative one had disappeared by the time i next looked. That comment would have made more sense of the link from mine to yours. never mind. I was just joshing, not very well, this time. and no insult intended.
there are enough flamers on here, without me starting! -

Really? that wasnt the tone of your post. So why did you waste so much of your time counting all my threads? Why keep repating the word 'arsehole' to someone you dont know? Do i know you? I dont think so. Have I killed your pet or something?
Ive asked you politely, but you keep on.
Best let the moderators sort it out. -

none taken mate, i'm just a little tired of having to explain why I ride my track bike without a front brake - it's fun to ride and I like the look of a proper track bike. I don't do it to be cool and pop mad skids in between the traffic. If I'm riding my track bike I'm happy to let others overtake me if I'm not comfortable stopping quickly at that speed.
If I'm on my road bike with Dura ace brakes, I ride like a mad man cuz I know I can stop on a dime if I need to. The idiots who ride without enough braking power for their speed will either be in hospital or in court fairly soon.
The brake debate is just as valid for those cool people riding poorly maintained or vintage bikes with steel rims, esp in the wet.

BTW hippy,
you know nothing of my financial dealings, or whether or not i happen to use paypal (which is the usual method for such donations). How could you possibly know if i donate £50 on the sale of my Jensen (answer 'yes') or not?Like i said. I think its definitely time for you to STFU, or at least stay on topic.

Oh shut up.
@sweatpee,
Yes, the law defines a fixed-wheel transmision as a brake, so you need one other brake on the bike, or two if you have a flip-flop hub with a freewheel fitted to the other side. A prosecution for the rider of a one-brake bike will depend which cog he is using. For ther shop, it depends on compliance with BS and C&U laws, so you still need two with a flipflop in order to sell the bike, but not to ride it.
