My Roberts has a modernish DA group (7700) and I love it, its obviously much better...
...but I also loved my old Carlton with a mishmash of Campag/DA from 70s and 80s, just for different reasons.
I don't think anyone would ever actually dispute that the latest development is inferior to the previous ones, I just find it funny that ppl actually go so far as to say if you enjoy road cycling you must have an upto-date version of one of the top groupsets - which is how I read MrSmyth's post.
I recently had an interesting convo with a friend, who had a very nice Condor/Ultegra built a couple of years ago, and he said if he was doing it again he wouldn't have bothered having the full Ultegra, because its not really necessary. And he does plenty of long, regular rides, and enters races from time to time.
